Immediate help for Gaza - keep backing the call from Francesca Albanese
Francesca Albanese
The call from UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Palestinians in the Occupied Territory, Francesca Albanese, for aid action, is still very much needed and alive.
Pending some action from the UN to break the Israeli food and water blockade of Gaza, Albanese is asking countries bordering the Mediterranean to join together to send protected aid convoys into Gaza.
The convoys would arrive by sea, but if Egypt agreed they could be delivered through Egypt’s border with Gaza.
Israel has given no indication that it will relieve the siege by any other than new cosmetic measures, such as the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which was set up by the Israeli government as a military operation to bypass the UN and other neutral agencies.
GHF is so utterly discredited, with more than a thousand Palestinians being killed at their four death distribution traps, that even Christopher Luxon criticises it.
Likewise, the multinational aid parachute-drops are again killing people they land on. Now that Gaza food production is destroyed, up to 700 aid lorries are needed each day. Each aircraft carries a mere half a truckload.
So, contact the embassies listed below to urge them to take up the Albanese call. We had good feedback from our call to contact Wellington based diplomats from last week’s Newsletter.
So, this week we’ve added in the contact details for Mediterranean diplomatic missions in Canberra, and some consular offices in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Four PSNA media releases this week:
‘Day of Action’ to protest continuing government ‘shameful dithering’ on Gaza genocide
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa is mounting a ‘day of action’ in more than 30 centres across the country this Saturday (16th August) to protest what it calls ‘shameful dithering’ by the New Zealand government.
PSNA centres throughout the country will be demanding the government impose sanctions on Israel immediately because of its genocide in Gaza, according to PSNA Co-Chair Maher Nazzal.
“New Zealand joined 24 European nations over this weekend to protest Israel’s latest announcement that it was going to occupy all of Gaza, and immediately planning to invade Gaza City,” Nazzal says.
“But those solely posturing government protests are not new. Foreign Minister, Winston Peters was telling the United Nations in April 2024, that there was an ongoing human catastrophe in Gaza and that it was a wasteland.”
“He sternly told the UN that Israel must not invade Rafah, the western countries ‘red line’ for Israel back then.”
“Of course, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, completely ignored Peters, the then US President Joe Biden, and everyone else. That was 16 months ago back in the genocide,” Nazal says.
“Netanyahu will ignore this recent red line too. He will posture some public relations tweaks and call people anti-semitic.”
“But the self confessed Israeli war goals have always been to ethnically cleanse Gaza.”
“Only serious sanctions will stop the Israeli bombing and its constructed famine. None have yet been imposed.”
Nazzal says the most immediate dramatic measures the New Zealand government could take would to ban military use products and services exports for Israel, stop Israeli soldiers visiting here and close the Israeli embassy.
“But there are many other equally important steps, such as cutting off trade, instructing the Superfund to quit its Israeli investments, or ending bilateral arrangements, such as technology cooperation.”
“If it needs legislation to deliver some of these sanctions, then the Green Party has already drafted up a bill for sanctions on Israel, based on the Russia Sanctions Act.”
“It’s not as though the government lacks options. Though we are physically a long way from Israel we are closely entwined with it.”
Nazal says the government should support the recent call by the Irish President, Michael Higgins, for the United Nations to invoke Chapter VII of the UN Charter and send protected convoys into Gaza to stop the famine.
“Or Peters could join other countries to convene an emergency session of the Uniting for Peace resolution to send in protected aid convoys.”
“It is not as though New Zealand has ever been shy about sending troops to the region.”
Last year, this government sent soldiers to fight Ansar Allah (Houthis) to keep sea lanes to Israel open.” Nazzal says.
“And for decades, New Zealand troops have been patrolling Israel’s border zones to protect Israel.”
“This time, we should be protecting and helping the occupied and starving, and not backing their occupying tormentors and starvers.”
Maher Nazzal

PSNA survey opinion poll shows strong popular support for sanctions against Israel
A recent poll on whether New Zealanders want sanctions to be imposed on Israel, shows that of those who gave an opinion, 60% favour sanctions.
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa commissioned survey gave a similar result to one commissioned by Justice for Palestine a year ago.
PSNA Co-Chair John Minto says the numbers show strong popular support for sanctions. The 60% overall rose to 68% for the 18 - 29 year category.
“The government is well out of step with public opinion and ignores this message at its peril. There is popular support for sanctions against Israel.”
“People see that Israel is committing the worst atrocities of the 21st century with impunity. It is starving a whole population. It has destroyed just about every building in Gaza. It is assassinating journalists. It holds 7,000 Palestinian hostages in its jails without charge. Its goal of occupying all of Gaza and ethnically cleansing its people into the Sudan desert, is all public knowledge.”
“Its depraved Prime Minister, wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity, is boasting that if Israel was really committing genocide, it could have killed everyone in Gaza in a single afternoon.”
“The poll shows New Zealand First supporters are most opposed to sanctions against Israel (59% of those who gave an opinion were opposed) so it’s little surprise Winston Peters is dragging the chain”
“National has contracted out foreign affairs to the most reactionary part of its coalition government and is tying all New Zealanders into supporting impunity for Israel for its genocide in Gaza.”
“This brings shame on every New Zealander. When once this country would have led the way speaking out for justice and human rights, Winston Peters has us tagging along with the US”
The poll also asked respondents if they favoured recognition of a Palestinian state.
“Very significantly, four percent more of them were for sanctions, than were for recognition. I presume they saw recognition as some sort of soft tokenism.”
“Our government can’t even manage that.”
Minto says immediate government moves are imperative. He says New Zealand’s position has become the weakest in the western world, slipping to be on par with the United States.
“There’s a whole raft of sanction options; including immigration, diplomatic, trade, investment, cutting off military services, and technical cooperation.”
“The only thing the government has done is ban two Israeli cabinet ministers from entering our country, while our Foreign Minister still welcomes thousands of participants a year in the genocidal Israeli army to come here for rest and recreation.”
Minto says even sanctions have become a soft option with the escalating crisis.
“What is urgently needed is for countries to band together to use their armies to break the Gaza blockade and deliver food, water and medicine’.”
“This could be through a United Nations mandate such as through a “Uniting for Peace” Resolution (UN General Assembly resolution 377(V)) through an Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly. It has to happen somehow.”
“The four daily killing traps of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation are a deliberate disaster organised by the Israeli Defence Forces. The aid parachute drops are a grossly inadequate farce”
“People in New Zealand can see this is happening. None of it is a secret or complicated anymore. Winston Peters is looking like Neville Chamberlain after Munich in 1938. He is failing us on Gaza. If he can’t deliver sanctions now, National has to replace him”
John Minto
Co-Chair PSNA

Government delay on recognising Palestinian state weak and deeply embarrassing
The government decision to delay till September considering whether to recognise a Palestinian state is weak and deeply embarrassing.
Recognising a Palestinian state is decades overdue and the government could even delay it further.
There was a time when New Zealand would have been a leader in standing up for human rights and international law but we are now the slowest follower in the western world – a shameful place to be.
But recognising Palestine is NOT a substitute for sanctions against Israel.
“Sanctions against Israel is the only way to force this apartheid state to end the genocide in Gaza” says PSNA Co-Chair John Minto. “This is the urgent priority.”
Israel continues with the mass killing and mass starvation of Palestinians in Gaza because it has never been held to account by western countries such as New Zealand.
“This impunity for genocide must end”
This Saturday 16 August the Palestine Solidarity movement has a National Day of Action for Palestine.
People in more than 30 centres will be rallying and marching and demanding the NZ government recognise Palestine and impose government sanctions against Israel’s genocidal attacks on Palestine.

Co-Chair PSNA

New Zealand should follow German lead and end military support for Israel
PSNA is urging the government to follow Germany’s lead and suspend New Zealand military support for Israel to continue its mass killing and mass starvation of Palestinians in Gaza.
Germany and New Zealand were two of the countries to sign a letter yesterday condemning Israel’s plans to extend its war to Gaza City, displacing another million Palestinians.
The German/New Zealand/others letter says:
“The plans that the government of Israel has announced risk violating international humanitarian law. Any attempts at annexation or of settlement extension violate international law. It will aggravate the catastrophic humanitarian situation, endanger the lives of the hostages, and further risk the mass displacement of civilians.”
PSNA Co-Chair John Minto says Israel has a long history of ignoring outside opinion because they never include accountabilities.
“However, Germany has followed its condemnation with action. New Zealand needs to do the same.”
Minto says New Zealand should:
End approval for Rakon to export crystal oscillators to the US which are used in guided bombs sent to Israel for bombing Gaza.
Ban all Rocket Lab launches from Mahia which are used for Israel reconnaissance in Gaza
Launch an investigation by the Inspector-General of Security and Intelligence into the sharing of intelligence with the US and Israel which can be used for targeting Palestinians
“New Zealanders expect our government to end its empty condemnations of Israel and act to sanction this rogue, genocidal state.”

This is what the first step in SodaSteam boycott success looks like
Persistent stickering means this store in Ōtautahi/Christchurch has moved SodaStream products behind the counter… now there is a sticker challenge!
STICKER! STICKER! BARCODE! BARCODE!
(Stickering the barcode makes it difficult to scan these products for sale)
The Warehouse in Hornby has relocated all the SS to a central location under visual surveillance by the information desk.
This can not be stickered covertly, an overt approach is required which completely changes the game. More on this coming up…
Remember the Noel Leeming stores are our first selected focus for the PSNA Swap out of Sodastream campaign.
A lesson we learnt from last year's Nobela action was that to be effective we need to target the retailer and not just the product.
Any decision to drop Sodastream products from the shelves will be made by the retailer - not Sodastream.
That retailer is more likely to decide to Swap out of Sodastream if we concentrate pressure on them.
It's only by making life uncomfortable for the operators of the more than 70 Noel Leemings around the country, will their accountants and brand managers ever decide to drop Sodastream.
Noel Leeming also stocks another BDS target - Hewlett Packard.

Remember the new challenge this week from the Sticker Phantom
The Sticker Phantom challenges all supporters to commit to 10 stickers per week on any SodaStream product (Noel Leemings the No 1 target) OR bettering the Sticker Phantom's new record of 211 stickers in a week.
Let us know how you get on – send us your stories to sodastreamboycott@psna.nz
And Remember the Sticker Phantom advice on stickering
Stickering products instore is not everybody’s cup of tea but for those keen to increases pressure on companies complicit with Israeli genocide and apartheid here are a few tips from an expert.
Fact: stickering SS products does hurt Israel. I have seen empty SodaSteam bays in both Woolworths & Warehouse stores due to stickering.
Select your target store – Our first focus is Noel Leeming (owned by the Warehouse group) so make that a priority if you have one close by…
Park on the street, never drive into the carpark. Number plate recognition is everywhere.
Wear a hat or cap, rimmed glasses (not sunglasses) & don't look up at the cameras .
Go when it's busy, Easter, Boxing Day sales, Sat/Sun midday.
I prefer not to buy anything but if you do pay cash.
I Individually rip off 10 stickers & place them face down in the palm of my hand, browse around until the SodaStream (SS) zone is clear.
If the SS zone doesn't clear after 10 minutes walk out, better not to get caught.
Target 1: the CO2 box's, flip & sticker the barcode. Press firmly & turn back over.
Target 2: the machines, most expensive first.
Target 3: syrup bottles, spin & sticker the barcode press firmly & turn back around.
Consistency is key, 2-3 week intervals work best.
At Noel Leeming & Harvey Norman, always talk to at least one salesperson before stickering, until then you are a sales target!
If you get caught you will be trespassed, after 700+ stickers I have been trespassed twice. Both times I believe it was number plate recognition, I got lazy & drove in.
When being verbally trespassed never give them your name but never give them a false name, leave promptly and don't go back for a long while (Don’t target stores near you if you will need to shop there! Target stores further away)
Here are the first signs of success with stickering – the company takes the product of the shelves and puts them behind the counter

Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk
This documentary from Iranian director Sepideh Farsi captures life in Gaza during the Israeli military bombardment, largely through Farsi’s video calls with Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassouna. Tragically, just one day after Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk was announced for Cannes Film Festival 2025, Hassouna - and nine members of her family - were killed in an Israeli airstrike. It’s an on-the-ground confrontation with the impact of war, and now exists as a heartbreaking time-capsule of one journalist’s bravery in the face of mass violence.

Remember possible action for local groups
For groups affiliated to PSNA we suggest the following actions could be taken at any time in support of this campaign
Asking your local backpacker accommodation to display the poster and draw it to the attention of any Israeli soldiers here on “rest and recreation” from the genocide.
Pasting the hotline poster (use the version in this newsletter which includes a contact email) around the vicinity of backpacker venues in your local area. This is already happening in some areas.
Hand out flyers to people in the vicinity of your local backpackers
Contact us on the hotline if you come across Israeli soldiers

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?
We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
