Sodastream Campaign finds its mojo…

WOW! YES! Those are Boycott SodaStream stickers going on the windows of a Big Fresh Store in Ōtautahi/Christchurch last weekend as part of our second BDS rally against Sodastream.

(The Noel Leeming store is too far away to march to so Big Fresh was the target this week)

When the march arrived outside the store the door was shut on us so hundreds of stickers were added to the outside décor in a big high energy action which the crowd chanted “B is for Boycott, D is for Divest and S is for Sanctions”

“It felt so good to be in a group as we did this BDS action – it felt like we could actually do something ourselves here rather than feel so bloody helpless when we see kids being starved to death in Gaza” says Margie who took part.

See the video on the Instagram page @PSNA_Ōtautahi

Remember the Noel Leeming stores are our first selected focus for the PSNA Swap out of Sodastream campaign.

A lesson we learnt from last year's Nobela action was that to be effective we need to target the retailer and not just the product.

Any decision to drop Sodastream products from the shelves will be made by the retailer - not Sodastream.

That retailer is more likely to decide to Swap out of Sodastream if we concentrate pressure on them.

It's only by making life uncomfortable for the operators of the more than 70 Noel Leemings around the country, will their accountants and brand managers ever decide to drop Sodastream.

Noel Leeming also stocks another BDS target - Hewlett Packard.

Remember when you take action, tell us your stories for the PSNA Newsletter at sodastreamboycott@psna.nz

A new challenge this week from the Sticker Phantom

The Sticker Phantom challenges all supporters to commit to 10 stickers per week on any SodaStream product (Noel Leemings the No 1 target) OR bettering the Sticker Phantom's new record of 211 stickers in a week.

Let us know how you get on – send us your stories to sodastreamboycott@psna.nz

And a new tip from the Sticker Phantom…

When gas cylinders are only available by request, ask for two, place them in your trolley then sticker the barcodes & relocate in the store when & where appropriate.

Remember the Sticker Phantom advice on stickering

Stickering products instore is not everybody’s cup of tea but for those keen to increases pressure on companies complicit with Israeli genocide and apartheid here are a few tips from an expert.

Fact: stickering SS products does hurt Israel. I have seen empty SodaSteam bays in both Woolworths & Warehouse stores due to stickering.

  • Select your target store – Our first focus is Noel Leeming (owned by the Warehouse group) so make that a priority if you have one close by…

  • Park on the street, never drive into the carpark. Number plate recognition is everywhere.

  • Wear a hat or cap, rimmed glasses (not sunglasses) & don't look up at the cameras .

  • Go when it's busy, Easter, Boxing Day sales, Sat/Sun midday.

  • I prefer not to buy anything but if you do pay cash.

  • I Individually rip off 10 stickers & place them face down in the palm of my hand, browse around until the SodaStream (SS) zone is clear.

  • If the SS zone doesn't clear after 10 minutes walk out, better not to get caught.

Target 1: the CO2 box's, flip & sticker the barcode. Press firmly & turn back  over.

Target 2: the machines, most expensive first.

Target 3: syrup bottles, spin & sticker the barcode press firmly & turn back around.

  • Consistency is key, 2-3 week intervals work best.

  • At Noel Leeming & Harvey Norman, always talk to at least one salesperson before stickering, until then you are a sales target!

  • If you get caught you will be trespassed, after 700+ stickers I have been trespassed twice. Both times I believe it was number plate recognition, I got lazy & drove in.

When being verbally trespassed never give them your name but never give them a false name, leave promptly and don't go back for a long while (Don’t target stores near you if you will need to shop there! Target stores further away)

Here are the first signs of success with stickering – the company takes the product of the shelves and puts them behind the counter

Kids Rock For Palestine

One Day. One Stage. One Cause.

This event is organised by kids in Pōneke to raise funds for kids in Palestine.

Join us for a one-day-only music fundraiser where young voices take centre stage to amplify hope and raise money for children in Palestine.

This isn’t just a concert, it’s a movement. Under-18 musicians, solo artists, and bands (some joined by over-18 allies) are coming together to rock out with purpose, showing that music knows no borders and compassion has no age limit.

These young performers are using their talents to stand in solidarity with kids just like them who are living through unimaginable circumstances.

Organiser Eddie 12: "We see children in Palestine who are being bombed and shot and are starving. We kids want to help. So that is what we are doing."

There will be stalls and crafting available for kids attending - Please come and support so we can raise money for Gaza's families.

  • 100% of proceeds go directly to emergency aid and child-focused relief in Palestine - Convoys of Good and Kiwi Trust for Palestinian Childrens Relief.

  • Witness the next generation of artists and activists sharing the stage and raising their voices. Please support them with your attendance. Show them young people can make a difference.

  • Be part of an event where music becomes action, and community becomes change.

Do you want to volunteer to help? Email aotearoa2gaza@gmail.com

ALL UNDER 18s MUST ATTEND WITH A PARENT OR GUARDIAN.

Tickets are available here: https://events.humanitix.com/kids-rock

Secret Terror law changes in New Zealand a serious threat to free speech and the right to protest

The FB event for the rally is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1391615978589086

As we reported last week, just as other western countries such as the US, UK and Australia are cracking down on pro-Palestinian protests, here in Aotearoa our police and IPCA have proposed radical restrictions on the right to protest while the government is now consulting secretly about proposed changes to our terrorism legislation which would criminalise support for the Palestinian resistance and the Palestinian right to take up arms to fight for their freedom.

If you are in Wellington and can get to this rally (see poster above) that would be an important step in challenging this attack on free speech and freedom of association and our basis rights under the Bill of Rights Act.

Appeal to Mediterranean governments

PSNA has sent this message to the four “Mediterranean embassies” in Aotearoa New Zealand. We suggest you also copy and paste this message appealing to them to seek a “United for Peace” resolution at the United Nations which can bypass the UN Security Council and the US veto… More details are in this appeal Irish president urges UN chief to invoke Chapter VII against Israel

Subject: Urgent Appeal to Provide Protected Aid Convoys to Gaza

Dear Ambassador ------------,

I write to you with the utmost concern about the escalation of the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip and the obligation and opportunity of Türkiye your country to take immediate and effective measures to prevent it becoming even worse.

More than two million people are actively targeted by Israel for starvation, bombing and ethnic cleansing.

Israel occupies most of Gaza.  It bombs the rest of the region with scarcely believable increasing ferocity every day after what soon will be two years of attack.

Israeli troops are playing literal Squid Games ‘green-light’ – ‘red-light’ shooting at desperate and starving Palestinians in the four so called ‘feeding stations’ run by Israel and the US in Gaza.

People are starving to death in increasing numbers. Many thousands more will inevitably die in a famine from the consequences of a blockade which began when Israel abrogated its ceasefire deal in March.

While the official direct death toll is 60,000, the actual number of those killed as a result of the Israeli attacks has been calculated to be more likely in the region of 280,000.

Israeli Defence Minister Katz is openly forcing the remaining Gaza population into Rafah.  This is not an accusation – it is policy.  It is a war crime.

A long delayed long-term permanent solution through the achievement of Palestinian rights has never been more vital in the 76 years of their denial.

But urgent action to feed starving people is also vital.

The Special Rapporteur for the oPt, Francesca Albanese has called for countries, which share of a common border with Gaza around the Mediterranean, to urgently send protected convoys to Gaza.

This could be expanded and reinforced by a mandate from a Uniting for Peace Resolution through an Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly to maintain or restore international peace and security.

This would not be a token action, such as the 2024 disastrous RAF parachute aid drops or the US floating pier.

I am not persuaded ether that the very recent Israeli, RAF or Jordanian parachute options, or a vaguely expressed intention by Israel to allow some UN aid access in the future, are anything other then public relations stunts.

A fully delivered and on the ground Mediterranean measure would be a genuine lifting of the Israeli blockade.

Of course, Israel would likely not permit it.

But Israel has neither the moral nor legal backing to prevent it.

Türkiye is an acceded party to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and is thus obligated to prevent and punish actions of genocide.

Türkiye is also a State Party to the Fourth Geneva Conventions, which mandate Türkiye to take steps to ensure international compliance with the GCIV.

This is not the time for further acquiescence to Israeli genocide.  It is the time for action and Türkiye to take a leadership role in materially assisting in alleviating a further catastrophe.

We are all Palestine Action

The British High Court has granted a full legal review of the UK government’s ban on Palestine Action – a group using civil disobedience protests to stop UK arms helping Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Palestine Action founder, Huda Ammori, will now be able to bring a full legal review in the Royal Courts of Justice. Full Press Release is here.

Why pick on BP and Caltex?

We are sometimes ask why pick on BP and Caltex brands. Fair question. Here is what we have on our website

BP:
BP is up to its neck in complicity with Israeli war crimes and theft of Palestinian resources. It has signed gas exploration deals with Israel to exploit gas reserves off the coast of Palestine and through ownership of the BTC pipeline supplies Israel with oil. See here: https://www.tni.org/en/article/pipeline-to-genocide. Palestinians in Gaza have begun legal action against BP for its fuelling of the genocide in Gaza https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/dec/23/gaza-war-victims-legal-action-bp-oil-supply-israel

Caltex:
The Caltex brand is owned by Chevron so Z Energy, which operates the Caltex brand here, pays licence fees to Chevron. Chevron is an international boycott target. See here: https://bdsmovement.net/chevron and here: https://afsc.org/chevron-fuels-israeli-apartheid-and-war-crimes

The BDS website includes a “pledge” “to boycott Chevron gas and products (including Chevron-owned brands Texaco and Caltex)”

https://bdsmovement.net/chevron

Both brands extract oil and gas from the Eastern Mediterranean for Israel, yet within Palestine’s maritime boundary.

Stealing from the occupied people of Palestine is a breach of international law.

Get your BP/Caltex boycott stickers from your local Palestine solidarity group or from Merchandise@PSNA.nz

Quotes of the week

“Nothing is missing any longer to understand that what is happening in Gaza is not the collateral damage of an ugly war – it is the objective. The mass starvation, destruction and death are the goal, and from here the path to the conclusion is short: genocide.”

 —Gideon Levy; Israeli Journalist, Haaretz

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

“The absolute incapacity of Western leaders to enforce international law when it comes to Israel is EPIC.

Ministers, Prime Ministers, Presidents of Republic:

Doing NOTHING, diverting attention, sanctioning individual ministers

IS NOT enforcing the [international] law that was developed after the Holocaust and WWII to prevent another Holocaust and WWII.”

—Francesca Albanese; UN Special Rapporteur for Israel & the Occupied Palestinian Territories

The DNA of the Israeli Defence Force

The DNA of the IDF - a speech by Dr Rod Pik in Dunedin here

Spotted in the Herald this week

If you are feeling hopeless and inadequate in the face of genocide…

US historian Howard Zinn said that after a lifetime of studying the history of U.S. social movements, he had come to a conclusion. He said every major movement for social change in our history was hopeless.

Hopeless from the beginning, hopeless through the middle, hopeless up to the very end -- people labouring toward a hopeless goal. But then, like a bolt out of a blue sky, a breakthrough. The key, he said, was that ordinary people kept at it despite all evidence. Ordinary people doing their small acts for justice every day -- here was the key. Over time peaceful acts add up to something big. What the powerful fear most, he said, are the grass-roots movements that won’t go away.

So our job is not to give up, give in, or go away. Take action, speak clearly as you can, and trust the lesson of history -- a kind of holy principle in the nature of things. Truthful, nonviolent movements are destined to win.

Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can quietly become a power no government can suppress, a power than can transform the world.”

A“Occupy Brandon Street”

Occupy Brandon Street activists on the job

The Israeli Embassy is on Brandon Street in Wellington. The Occupy Brandon Street Group is also there”. In their own words here is what the group has been doing:

We are a decentralised group of volunteers called "Occupy Brandon Street”

Most of us are members of PSNA, Justice for Palestine and/or other more formal groups and we do have a similar kaupapa to these bigger groups.

We are normally outside the Israeli Embassy, MFAT or other locations in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington City three times a week on week days.

We have around 61 members in total and a steering group to coordinate everything.

Our main focus is on public engagement and education about Palestine through having a presence outside the Israeli Embassy, being approachable and distributing the PSNA leaflets.

A story from Brandon street:

Today I had a real breakthrough when a tall pakeha man named Craig walking a dog came over and asked me if I remembered him. I said that I didn't sorry. He reminded me that he walked past us a while ago and that him and I had an exchange of words. He said that when he yelled at me he was feeling protective of his Israeli friends but he now realizes that things have gone way too far in Gaza and he wanted to apologize to me specifically. I thanked him warmly for doing so and said sorry if I had been short tempered towards him previously. Craig told me he believes in karma and has put it right with me. We shook hands and he went in his way. I've always hoped this would happen with the people who yell abuse at us but wasn't counting on it. They seem unreachable at times. It really made my day. I hope he continues his journey into the right side of history.

Positive response to petition to Palmerston North City Council for Gaza

The Palmerston North-based advocacy group Thyme4Action has launched a campaign calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and for Palmerston North City Council to adopt an ethical stance by avoiding contracts with companies complicit in the illegal occupation of Palestine.
The group has kicked off their initiative with a community petition urging Council to pass resolutions in support of Gaza and uphold international human rights standards. The petition went live online this week and is already gaining widespread support and community backing

The Petition is at https://our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/search?query=Thyme4action

Please sign and promote the Petition in your networks (The petition can be signed by anyone – just include your address as well as your name)

Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk

This documentary from Iranian director Sepideh Farsi captures life in Gaza during the Israeli military bombardment, largely through Farsi’s video calls with Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassouna. Tragically, just one day after Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk was announced for Cannes Film Festival 2025, Hassouna - and nine members of her family - were killed in an Israeli airstrike. It’s an on-the-ground confrontation with the impact of war, and now exists as a heartbreaking time-capsule of one journalist’s bravery in the face of mass violence.

Keep spreading the message about the Genocide Hotline!

Remember possible action for local groups

For groups affiliated to PSNA we suggest the following actions could be taken at any time in support of this campaign

  • Asking your local backpacker accommodation to display the poster and draw it to the attention of any Israeli soldiers here on “rest and recreation” from the genocide.

  • Pasting the hotline poster (use the version in this newsletter which includes a contact email) around the vicinity of backpacker venues in your local area. This is already happening in some areas.

  • Hand out flyers to people in the vicinity of your local backpackers

  • Contact us on the hotline if you come across Israeli soldiers

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)

Our account details are:

  • Account name: Palestine Solidarity Network

  • Account number: 38-9015-0849542-00

We are happy to provide a receipt upon request (however, we are not a registered charity so this is not tax-deductible)
