2) Copy and paste this letter to the Egyptian Ambassador

His Excellency
Mr George Azer Saleeb Tadros,
Egyptian Ambassador to New Zealand

c/o egyptianembassy@xtra.co.nz

I am writing to ask Egypt to allow the Global March to Gaza to take place next week with full political support and material assistance from the Egyptian government.

We know Egypt is as appalled as the rest of us at Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and we look forward to Egypt doing all it can possibly do to facilitate this march and assist the international representatives to break Israel’s siege and allow the thousands of aid trucks to enter unhindered.

Many New Zealanders will be on this march and they carry the love and support of the big majority of their fellow citizens who are utterly aghast at Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. Please help them represent us and all humanity at the Gaza border.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kia ora koutou,

I  am writing to ask the government to give full political and practical support to the Global March to Gaza taking place later this week.

Your government has failed to take any significant action to condemn or sanction Israel for its horrendous war crimes and therefore many New Zealanders are taking part in this march to represent the big majority of the country who demand an end to Israeli impunity for war crimes and unhindered access to Gaza for the thousands of aid trucks Israel is refusing to allow in.

These courageous New Zealanders will carry the love and support of the big majority of their fellow citizens who are utterly aghast at Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

We ask that as well as providing full political and practical support to the march that your government also inform Israel that New Zealand will not tolerate their interference in the march’s goal of ending Israel’s humanitarian blockade of Gaza.

We look forward to hearing from you.

4) Write to Doc Edge – see the information below and the letter from Hugh Ferguson for inspiration.

Doc Edge are at it again

Doc Edge are back to screening pro-Israel films but NEVER a Palestinian film. In previous years they have even accepted sponsorship from the Israeli Embassy (They did screen the Israeli film Tantura last year – investigating the massacre at the Palestinian fishing village in 1948)

This year they are screening two Israeli films:

The issues are well summed up by Palestine supporter Hugh Ferguson who sent in this complaint to Doc Edge:

I wish to register my objection to the screening of the film "A Letter to David" in the. At a time when the Israeli genocide in Gaza has killed 55,000 people, screening a film about the kidnapping of of one Israeli by Hamas is grotesque. Tragic and poignant as the film might be, screening it now, as Gazans are being deliberately starved by the Israeli state, is at best tone-deaf, at worst callous propaganda.

I urge you to cancel the screening. I will be boycotting DocEdge, and urging all those I know to do the same. I will also be relaying this same message to all your partners.

Ngā mihi

Hugh Ferguson

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Doc Edge replied:

Dear Hugh,

Thank you for your email and for taking the time to share your views with us.

Doc Edge is an independent, Oscar®-qualifying documentary festival committed to freedom of expression and to showcasing a wide range of stories, perspectives, and lived experiences. We believe in the power of documentaries to spark dialogue, challenge thinking, and foster understanding – even when the content may be difficult or controversial.

The screening of A Letter to David is not an endorsement of any government or political action. It is part of a broader programme that includes diverse and sometimes opposing viewpoints. As with all films in the festival, it has been selected for its relevance, quality, and contribution to the documentary landscape.

We understand that some stories may be painful or contentious, particularly in the current global context. We respect your decision and acknowledge your right to voice your concerns and make choices accordingly.

Sincerely,
The Doc Edge Team

 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Hugh replied:

Dear Doc Edge Team

I'm afraid your position is not good enough.

I've read your Values and Principles statement, and it allows you to abrogate ethical responsibility, as most media organisations do. Of course, that is usually touted as "ensuring balance", which typically means balancing the weak voices of the marginalised with the overbearing voices of the powerful. This is what you are doing, deliberately or not, with "A Letter To David". The film has behind it the whole weight of Israel's hegemony in the Middle East and its suborning of Western elites. It reinforces the idea that the unhappiness of one person at the kidnapping of an Israeli friend outweighs the agony of many Palestinian people. You may not intend it as an endorsement of any government or political action, but that is precisely its effect.

In what way will "A Letter To David" spark dialogue with the Israeli state, challenge its thinking, and foster understanding of its behaviour? The Israeli state is genocidal. It was born out of ethnic cleansing in 1948, and it is continuing that ethnic cleansing by killing Gazans and preparing to expel the remainder from their homeland. Israel is beyond any self-awareness or control, determined to go its own way regardless of how depraved it becomes.

In the usual way of things, your stand on freedom of speech might be reasonable. Conflicting positions can balance each other out, and can then be weighed up in a considered way. But now is not the usual way of things. Israel's genocide is being normalised by the West, and New Zealand plays a part in that by looking the other way. Screening "A Letter To David" might seem like a tiny act, but it supports the enormity of genocide. In that way, it becomes significant. It compounds our - your - complicity.

Let me remind you that you chose the timing of the screening. In the years ahead, if peace returns and the people of Gaza have survived, "A Letter To David" might indeed provide the nuance that you prize. You could have chosen to delay the screening, even for just a year. But instead you chose to screen it now, when Israel is carrying out pogroms against Palestinians in the West Bank, committing piracy in international waters, and making undeclared war on Lebanon and Syria. You may try to pretend that the screening is context free, that it is justified regardless of what else is happening. But in practice it is a political act, and an ethical choice, whether you like it or not.

So I find your Values and Principles hollow. They are clearly designed to allow you, and your filmmakers, to float free of any political and ethical impacts they might have in real contexts. And most of the time that might not matter, as documentary films so often address political and ethical deficits. But is that what "A Letter To David" is doing? I don't think so.

I'm glad that you acknowledge my right to voice my concerns and make choices accordingly. You'll understand then that I need to do what little I can to prevent this screening from happening.

Hugh Ferguson

Letter in NZ Herald

Otago University students and the Tertiary Education Union step up for BDS action

The question was: Should OUSA adopt a policy for its operations that aligns with the call for "Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions" against the government of Israel, which would involve, amongst other measures, boycotting sporting, cultural, and academic institutions, and all Israeli and international companies engaged in violations of Palestinian human rights?

The students said YES!

The remit passed at the 2025 TEU conference states that the TEU:

- Demands an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, and the lifting of the siege of Gaza.
- Condemns the horrific impact of the war on the higher education community in Gaza, and recognises the responsibility that Aotearoa New Zealand tertiary institutions have to a global higher education community that champions human rights, peace, and democratic debate.
- Calls on Aotearoa New Zealand tertiary institutions to:
— Explore and implement practical support measures for affected Palestinian educational institutions, their faculties and students, such as the provision of resources, partnerships, and institutional scholarships.
— Critically review, disclose and divest from research and commercial partnerships with firms and entities directly involved in military support for the war on Gaza.
— Critically review any tertiary institution’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Association’s definition of antisemitism, which itself constitutes a challenge to the academic freedom and intellectual freedom that are fundamental to our Collective Agreements, legislation, and policies.

Nakba Keys – a message from Ōtautahi/Christchurch

At our Ōtautahi Nakba rally, we handed out key necklaces to our rally supporters. They were very well received. The key is a widely recognised symbol of the 1948 Nakba and the Palestinians’ right of return. If you are interested in this idea as a gift or for fundraising purposes, please contact Ava for more information: ava.mulla@gmx.de

One necklace costs approx. 22cts incl. key, tag, cord and shipping. It took our team of 4 people 2 hours to assemble 180 of them. The keys come in various shapes and sizes. The print-ready template for the tags is available.

Keep spreading the message about the Genocide Hotline!

Remember possible action for local groups

For groups affiliated to PSNA we suggest the following actions could be taken at any time in support of this campaign

  • Asking your local backpacker accommodation to display the poster and draw it to the attention of any Israeli soldiers here on “rest and recreation” from the genocide.

  • Pasting the hotline poster (use the version in this newsletter which includes a contact email) around the vicinity of backpacker venues in your local area. This is already happening in some areas.

  • Hand out flyers to people in the vicinity of your local backpackers

  • Contact us on the hotline if you come across Israeli soldiers

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
