Two PSNA media releases this week

New lows of cowardice and complicity from our Foreign Minister

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters

Fresh from refusing to condemn Israel for its egregious war crimes of industrial-scale killing and mass starvation of civilians in Gaza, our Foreign Minister has outdone himself with the most craven of tweets on Israel’s massive attack on Iran.

Winston Peters has said he is “gravely concerned by the escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran” and that “all actors” must “prioritise de-escalation”.

There is no mention of Israel as the aggressor and no condemnation of Israel’s attack launched in the middle of negotiations between Iran and the US on Iran’s nuclear programme.

“It’s Mr Peters’ most obsequious tweet yet which leaves a cloud of shame hanging over the country”

“Appeasement of this rogue state, as our government and other western countries have done over 20 months, have led Israel to believe it can attack any country it likes with absolute impunity”

“Israel has conducted mass killing and mass starvation of Palestinians and then attacked any country which has objected to its barbarity – namely Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and now Iran”

Mr Peters’ tweet continues the government’s fact-free and principle free line that Israel has the right to defend (by attacking other countries) but Iran does not”

“Holding Israel to account based on international law and United Nations resolutions is the magic solution to end forever the ongoing crises in the Middle East”

Maher Nazzal
Co-Chair PSNA

Expel the Israeli ambassador now!

Israeli ambassador Mr Alon Roth-Snir interviewed by Israeli genocide supporter Sean Plunkett

Israeli ambassador PSNA is calling on the government to immediately expel the Israeli ambassador from New Zealand.

Israel’s unprovoked, unilateral strikes against Iran are a massive threat to humanity everywhere.

“Weasel words about Israel are not acceptable” says PSNA Co-Chair John Minto. “Israel is an out-of-control rogue state playing with the future of humanity. It is using its often repeated lies and misinformation to attempt to justify it’s unconscionable violence and aggression.”

Iran has the right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes and even US intelligence sources say Iran is NOT on the way to produce a nuclear weapon. And neither is Iran committed to the “annihilation” of Israel. Iran does not support Israel as a racist, apartheid state and wants to see liberation for Palestine. In this Iran called for an end to Israel’s military occupation of Palestine, the end of its apartheid policies directed against Palestinians and the return of Palestinian refugees.

“Our government must shoulder some of the blame for Israel launching these attacks on Iran.”

“Appeasement of this apartheid state, as our government and other western countries have done over 20 months, have led Israel to believe it can get away within mass murder and that whatever it does it will be never be held to account”

“The weasel words of appeasement from our Foreign Minister and Prime Minister today follow the same pattern of the past 20 months as Israel has conducted mass slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza alongside mass starvation as a weapon of war”

“Only sanctions count – and the first one must be the expulsion of the Israel ambassador”

John Minto
Co-Chair

Three things you do now with just a few clicks…

1) Join your local Palestine solidarity protests as well as share them on your social media pages – see list above!

2) Copy and paste this letter to the Egyptian Ambassador

Shame on your regime and shame on your collaboration with the US/Israel.

I am appalled that your political regime has attacked Par-Palestinians activists who joined the Global March to Gaza.

Using hired thugs to attack, assault and abuse people wanting to highlight Israel’s deliberate starvation of Palestinians is unconscionable.

Many of these are New Zealanders who are our friends and family.

The only thing you have achieved here is to expose your long-term collaboration with the racist apartheid state of Israel.

Shame on you.

Kia ora koutou,

Israel has now attacked Occupied Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and now Iran

The reason Israel has attacked these countries is because they support Palestinian self-determination.

Israel says it has attacked Iran because Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Netanyahu has repeated this mantra for decades – always an Iranian nuke is just around the corner. And always it is a lie.

Even US intelligence agencies say it is not true.

And Israel says Iran wants to “annihilate” Israel. Another Israeli lie. What Iran is calling for is the liberation of the Palestinian people. Iran wants to see the end of racism and apartheid against Palestinians. They want to see the end of genocide and deliberate starvation.

In situations like these we rely on our government to speak out for us but your government is silent.

There is a magic solution to the Middle East crisis. It is to require Israel to follow International law and United Nations resolutions. Period.

Why is that so hard for New Zealand to articulate?

Multiple PSNA complaints to TVNZ

PSNA has sent a complaint to TVNZ over multiple news items last week over its coverage of the IDF killing of Palestinians at the so called aid stations run by US contractors and the IDF in Gaza.

TVNZ refuses to state the Israeli forces did kill starving Palestinians.  It will quote eyewitnesses, but cast doubt on them by, throughout the week, carefully avoid reporting the Israeli killings as fact.

Its news bulletins instead followed Israeli talking points suggesting that the killings were carried out by Hamas who is looting the food and other supplies.

It shows that TVNZ is once more succumbing to an intensifying Hasbara campaign run by the Israeli government.  The Washington Post initially reported that Israeli forces were doing the killing, based on multiple witnesses.  Then suddenly it retracted it story, apologising for relying on Hamas as the basis for the story - which it hadn't.

Likewise, multiple Israeli 'news agencies' also reported the BBC as changing the same story -  it hadn't.

Of course, TVNZ has no trouble reporting Israeli claims as fact - such as the circumstances of killing Mohammed Sinwar.

A PSNA complaint some months ago against TVNZ reporting of what it called anti-semitic attacks on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam was upheld by the Broadcasting Standards Authority.  The facts were that it was the soccer fans who were doing the attacking.

Quotes for the week

“[Israel] has committed a crime in our dear country today at dawn with its satanic, bloodstained hands. It has revealed its malicious nature even more than before by targeting residential areas”

—Ali Khamenei; Supreme Leader of Iran

"[The Iranian foreign ministry charged that] the Israeli regime’s aggressive actions against Iran could not have happened without US coordination and permission. Therefore, the US government, as the main supporter, is responsible for the dangerous consequences of this adventurism.”

—Iranian Foreign Ministry

“The only thing that you can really achieve by trying to bomb Iranian nuclear sites is to provoke a reprisal by Iran that helps escalate the situation into a larger war and draws in the United States. That’s what any purported effort to bomb away the Iranian nuclear program is actually aiming at.”

“Iran has never built a nuclear weapon. That is a choice that successive leadership in that country has made. But the way to ensure that they do try to sprint to a nuclear weapon is to make them feel that they have no other choice.”

—Harrison Mann; Former U.S. Army Major and Executive Officer of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) for the Middle East/Africa Regional Center.

"The illegal attack by Israel, a nuclear-armed state, against the Iranian leadership and nuclear sites may somewhat delay but cannot prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and is likely to have the opposite effect."

--Arms Control Association

“The fact that Israel attacked Iran doesn’t mean [the war in] Gaza ended. Today we had dozens of people killed, the only difference is this will have far less attention than yesterday.

“Israel’s message [with these attacks] is that there is no political solution for anything in the region. By striking Iran they want to sabotage the US-Iran negotiations as well as the international wave of support for concrete measures on Palestine.”

—Xavier Abu Eid; Political Scientist & Former Adviser to the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Nakba Keys – a message from Ōtautahi/Christchurch

At our Ōtautahi Nakba rally, we handed out key necklaces to our rally supporters. They were very well received. The key is a widely recognised symbol of the 1948 Nakba and the Palestinians’ right of return. If you are interested in this idea as a gift or for fundraising purposes, please contact Ava for more information: ava.mulla@gmx.de

One necklace costs approx. 22cts incl. key, tag, cord and shipping. It took our team of 4 people 2 hours to assemble 180 of them. The keys come in various shapes and sizes. The print-ready template for the tags is available.

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.

You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)

Our account details are:

  • Account name: Palestine Solidarity Network
