SodaStream Campaign launch – from Saturday July 19th
Stickers and leaflets have been sent around the country for the launch of our SodaStream boycott campaign “Swap out of Sodastream” this coming weekend.
It’s going to be a great campaign which follows on the success of the Boycott Obela campaign from last year.
SodaStream has been a BDS target for many years. It started as an Israeli-owned company but is now owned by PepsiCo although the bulk of production still takes place in Israel for the benefit of the Israeli economy and therefore helps Israel maintain its unlawful occupation in Palestine.
Some centres are intending to write to their local Noel Leeming management to seek a meeting to explain why we want them to boycott SodaStream. (Note: PSNA has already written to the Warehouse Group which owns Noel Leeming asking them to Swap out of SodaStream and sell alternatives – there are at least two – including one made in New Zealand. We have had no response.)
If your local group haven’t received SodaStream leaflets and stickers then please email at Merchandise@PSNA.nz and we will send them to you pronto! All branches should have these by the weekend.
One of the best features of the Boycott Obela campaign was the weekly newsletter which went out to the whole country with pics and reports of events and actions in the campaign. We will do the same this time with a dedicated section on the campaign in the weekly PSNA newsletter. You can send pics and stories to SodaStreamboycott@PSNA.nz for the weekly update in the newsletter.
Four things you can do now for Palestine…
1. Go with family and friends to your local protest – see details at the start of the newsletter.
2. Copy the Boycott SodaStream image from above and share on your social media pages.
3. Get some of the new leaflets and stickers on the SodaStream campaign to share with family and friends and help to spread the word.
4. Get some of the new “Contaminated with apartheid” stickers for your dashboard, driver’s window and petrol cap – see item immediately below this. Give a few to neighbours, friends and colleagues as well
Boycott BP and Caltex – contaminated with apartheid
This is the new sticker to put on your dashboard and petrol cap as a reminder of the brans to boycott. Your local group should have copies of these stickers – If not you can email Merchandise@PSNA.nz and we can send you some.
Government told NZ should NOT follow Australia’s lead to criminalise support for Palestine
PSNA media release this week:
Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa is urging the New Zealand government NOT to follow Australia’s example with measures which would effectively criminalise the Palestine solidarity movement.
The Australian government has announced plans to implement recommendations from its anti-semitism envoy which PSNA says creates a ‘hierarchy of racism’ with anti-semitism at the top, while Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism hardly feature.
However we know at least some of the appalling anti-semitic attacks in Sydney have been bogus.
PSNA Co-chair John Minto says PSNA has no tolerance for anti-semitism in Aotearoa New Zealand, or anywhere else.
“But equally there should be no place for any other kind of racism, such as Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism. Our government must speak out against all forms of discrimination and support all communities when racism rears its ugly head. Let’s not forget the murderous attacks on the Christchurch mosques.”
Minto says the Australian measures will inevitably be used to criminalise the Palestinian solidarity movement across Australia.
“We see it happening in the US, to attack and demonise support for Palestinian human rights by the Trump administration. We see it orchestrated in the UK to shut down any speech which Prime Minister Starmer and the Israeli government don’t like.”
PSNA agrees with the Jewish Council of Australia who have warned the Australian government adopting these measures could result in
“undermining Australia’s democratic freedoms, inflaming community divisions, and entrenching selective approaches to racism that serve political agendas”
Minto says the free speech restrictions in the US, UK and Australia have nothing to do with what people usually understand as anti-semitism.
“The drive comes from the Israeli government. They see making anti-semitism charges as the most effective means of preventing anyone publicly pointing to the genocide its armed forces are perpetrating in Gaza.”
“The definition of anti-semitism, usually inserted into codes of ethics or legislation, is from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. The IHRA definition includes eleven examples. Seven of the examples are about criticising Israel.”
“It’s quite clear the Israeli campaign is to distract the community from Israel’s horrendous war crimes, such as the round-the-clock mass killing and mass starvation of Palestinians in Gaza, and deflect calls for sanctions against Israel.”
“Already we can see in both the UK and US, that people have been arrested for saying things about Israel which would not have been declared illegal if they’d said it about other countries, including their own.”
Minto says there are already worrying signs that the New Zealand government and New Zealand media and police are falling into the trap.
“Just over the past few weeks, there has been an unusually wide-ranging mainstream media focus on anti-semitism;
At least one opinion piece in the Stuff newspapers from NZ Jewish Council spokesperson Ben Kepes on anti-semitism here
A major interview in Stuff on anti-semitism with NZJC spokesperson Ben Kepes
A New Zealand Herald opinion piece from NZJC spokesperson Juliet Moses
A New Zealand Herald podcast featuring Holocaust Foundation spokesperson Deborah Hart. The Holocaust Foundation is partly funded by the Israeli Embassy.
An enthusiastic 1News item on the latest appeal to the government to adopt similar measures here to those taken in Australia (TVNZ One News 13 July 2025)
Stories highlighting anti-semitic graffiti in Wellington – numerous reports along these lines
Stuff newspapers highlighting the case of an assault on a visiting Israeli after an altercation in Christchurch with the accused held overnight, denied bail and the police claiming it was a “hate crime”
However, our politicians and media have been silent about;
An attack which knocked a young Palestinian woman to the ground when she was using a microphone to speak during an Auckland march
An attack where a Palestine supporter was kicked and knocked to the pavement outside the Israeli embassy in Wellington. The accused was wearing an Israeli flag. He was not held in custody and the Post newspaper has reported neither the arrest nor the resulting charge (this case is due in court 15 July)
An attack on a Palestine solidarity marshal in Christchurch who was punched in the face, in front of police, but no action taken.
An attack in Christchurch when a Destiny Church member kicked a solidarity marshal in the chest (no action taken by police)
Anti-Palestinian racist attacks on the home of a Palestine solidarity activist in New Plymouth. One of our supporters has had their front fence spraypainted twice with pro-Israel graffiti and their car tyres slashed twice (4 tyres in total) and had vile defamatory material circulated in their neighbourhood. (The police say they cannot help)
The frequent condemnation of anti-semitism by the previous Chief Human Rights Commissioner, but his refusal to condemn the deep-seated anti-Palestinian racism of the New Zealand Jewish Council and Israel Institute of New Zealand.
The refusal of the Human Rights Commission to publicly correct false statements it published in the Post newspaper which claimed anti-semitism was increasing, when in fact the evidence it was using was that the rate of incidents had declined.
Minto says in each of the cases above there would have been far more attention from politicians, the police and the media had the victims been Israeli supporters.
“Meanwhile, both our government and the New Zealand Jewish Council have refused to condemn Israel’s blatant war crimes. There is silence on the mass killing, mass starvation and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza. The Jewish Council and our government stand together and refuse to hold Israel’s racist apartheid regime to account in just about any way.”
“This refusal to condemn what genocide scholars, including several Israeli genocide academics, have labelled as a “text-book case of genocide’, brings shame on both the New Zealand Jewish Council and the New Zealand government.”
“Adding to the clear perception of appalling bias on the part of our government, both the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, have met with New Zealand Jewish Council spokespeople over the war in Gaza.”
“But both have refused to meet with representatives of Palestinian New Zealanders, or the huge number of Jewish supporters of the Palestine solidarity movement.”
“New Zealand must stand up and be counted against genocide wherever it appears and no matter who the victims are.”

A Palestinian reports on experiencing the Occupied West Bank
Maruwan
When Ben asked me to speak today, I didn’t really know what to talk about.
There is so much to say that I couldn’t get my head around anything.
I didn’t want to talk about how shameful is the political environment we see, where Trump is nominated for the Nobel peace prize and Francesca Albanese, who stood up for truth and justice, is sanctioned by the US government.
I didn’t want to talk about another massacre in Gaza.
I didn’t want to talk about another settler’s attack in the West Bank.
Because I feared that by simply listing these events, we lose touch with the people. I feared that by simply giving numbers, these people become mere statistics.
Palestinians are not statistics; they are fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, friends, companions, doctors, musicians, teachers.. they are you
They have names. They have stories, they have dreams.
They cry, they laugh, and they love. Like all of us.
So today, I want to tell you about a family I met when I was in the West Bank.
A family who is still resisting against the apartheid and the violence of the settlers and army. Because they don’t want to become victims of the ongoing Nakba.
They don’t want to lose their right to fight for their homeland by simply existing.
I could have a taste of the apartheid and racism last time I went to Palestine. I was held at the border between Jordan and Palestine for about 4 hours and being interrogated for almost an hour.
I remember having thought how sad was, that an israeli border officer with a strong eastern European accent had the power to decide if I was allowed to step on my father’s land or not.
And when I finally was able to pass, I couldn’t hold the tears dropping on my face. Because my mind, immediately went to the Palestinian living in exile, here in Aotearoa and around the world who never had the privilege I had.
When I was in MY, I spent some time with Nour and her husband Taysir. They live with their 7 kids in a small house on the south Hebron hills.
I already knew about their story, how in the past Taysir was beaten by Bodi, a settler security officer, who then beat Nour for simply trying to defend her husband.
I remember that day, before meeting them, receiving a video with a call for help that we couldn’t respond because we were already dealing with another emergency.
I remember seen in that video Bodi, right outside their house.
Nour and Tamam, her 3 years old daughter, both crying while filming behind the window.
I will never forget the terror I heard in their voices.
Luckily Bodi left shortly after, to actually come threat the family where I was.
Anyways, the same evening, I could give a face to these voices.
And it was shocking. Because when you meet the people of the stories you heard about, it hits in a different way.
That evening, I remember playing a card game with the kids while Nour was preparing dinner. I remember Leila, the eldest daughter, telling me she wants to become a lawyer, and Omar, the eldest son who wants to follow his father’s steps and become a shepherd. I remember having a sigarette and a cup of tea with Taysir, who always wore a black and green kuffyah on his head. And his beautiful big smile, that too often failed to hide his tired and very sad eyes.
I will never forget the harmony I felt watching these kids helping each other with the bedtime routine. Or how much Nour and Taysir loved each other.
Within the walls of their home everything felt beautiful and normal.
But we knew that outside the reality was totally different. And as a reminder, Taysir, myself and Scott, a 70-year-old US veteran, that night slept on the floor right in front of the main door, left open to let us be alerted in case of a settler attack.
The morning after, Scott showed me how closed were the illegal settlements, to be aware from where the threat was coming from. Avigail and Ma’on on the hills at east, a checkpoint at north, the settlement of Susya on the hills at west, Mitzpe Yair and an illegal outpost under construction on the south right before a military firing zone.
We felt surrounded. And it felt like a cancer devouring more and more Palestinian land.
And like this family, hundreds if not thousand live in a similar or worse situation in Area C of the WB.
As we rightfully are all focussed to stop the genocide in Gaza, it’s important not to forget the WB. Because in the darkness of our media another part of Palestine is bleeding.
Thank you for listening
Free Palestine!
PSNA’s referral of government minister and business leaders to the International Criminal Court
We are getting plenty of hugely positive feedback from our referral of government ministers and business leaders to the International Criminal Court and are fielding plenty of questions from supporters.
We recommend you read the first 20 paragraphs of the 104-page ICC referral which summarise the issues.(If you have time you can read the full referral which is a devastating critique of complicity with genocide)
The information is on our website at https://www.psna.nz/icc-referral and the relevant links are as below.
The media release announcing the referral can be read HERE, the referral document can be read HERE and the annexes can be read HERE.
Meanwhile we have printed a leaflet – see image above – which will be available from your local group. We want to spread the word widely (mainstream media have refused to publicise it so far) to bring accountability for our government’s complicity in Israeli genocide.
Palestinian traditional dress day – July 25th
A suggestion for a theme at rallies across the country on Sat 26/Sun 27 July, as Palestinian Traditional Dress Day is celebrated annually on July 25th. It's a day for Palestinians to showcase and celebrate their rich cultural heritage through traditional clothing.
Key aspects of the day:
Celebration of Palestinian Culture:
The day highlights the beauty and significance of traditional Palestinian clothing, known as thobes, which are often intricately embroidered with regional designs and patterns.
Preservation of Heritage:
The celebration aims to preserve Palestinian cultural identity and heritage, particularly in the face of ongoing challenges.
Symbol of Resilience:
The traditional dress is seen as a symbol of Palestinian resilience and a connection to their land and history.
New Zealand International Film Festival – two good films
Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk
This documentary from Iranian director Sepideh Farsi captures life in Gaza during the Israeli military bombardment, largely through Farsi’s video calls with Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassouna. Tragically, just one day after Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk was announced for Cannes Film Festival 2025, Hassouna - and nine members of her family - were killed in an Israeli airstrike. It’s an on-the-ground confrontation with the impact of war, and now exists as a heartbreaking time-capsule of one journalist’s bravery in the face of mass violence.

Quotes of the week!
“I don’t know of any comparable situation.
Recent estimates show that about 70% of the structures in Gaza are either completely destroyed or severely damaged. The argument that the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] is conducting a war in Gaza is simply cynical, there is no war in Gaza. What the IDF is doing in Gaza is demolishing it. Hundreds of buildings are being bulldozed every week. This is not a secret, but mainstream media coverage has been insufficient.
—Omer Bartov; Israeli Genocide Historian
“The idea that the bulldozer has become a major article of genocide and warfare is quite new. What is happening in Gaza is not a building here or there being demolished; it’s the destruction of whole villages and towns. The Israeli military usually does not work in this way. … I would consider this as a form of ‘outsourcing demolitions’ used to advance a genocidal project.”
—Neve Gordon; Professor of International Law & Human Rights, Queen Mary University-London “Until Witkoff and Trump weigh in on the issues, [the Israelis] are not going to budge. This is just a propaganda tour in which they are trying to tell the Palestinians and the whole world and their own people that they are negotiating and trying to see if they can get anywhere. But the final outcome will be what takes place today and tomorrow in Washington. The bottom line is not what’s taking place [with the negotiations] in Doha.”
—Palestinian Source close to Negotiations

BDS at 20 years old!
Congratulations to the BDS movement at 20 years old. In the case of South Africa it took 20 years from the first appeals for boycotts of white South Africa for the campaign to gain momentum in the western world. BDS is now beginning to bite deeply in western countries such as New Zealand where campaigns are successfully getting local bodies to stand with international law and the Palestinian struggle and boycott campaigns are becoming seriously successful.

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?
We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)

Human rights for Uyghur refugees - In line with our support for human rights for the people of Palestine we have added our name to the petition in support of human rights for Uyghur refugees so they can be included in the government’s refugee quota. PSNA members who wish to also sign this petition can do so here - https://our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/open-letter-let-s-show-compassion-to-the-uyghur-community
