Peters fails again – time for real action on Occupied Gaza
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa says New Zealand’s signature on a joint statement of 25 countries on Gaza is meaningless without concrete action.
PSNA Co-Chair John Minto says Peters’ statements in the media this morning, fall well short of the condemnation in the joint statement, and are what Minto calls the usual ducking the issue of Israeli culpability.
“Peters still can’t bring himself to criticise Israel in Gaza – even after 21 months of mass killing and mass starvation of Palestinians. He condemns a suffering situation, but carefully avoids stating who it causing it.”
Minto says there is an extensive list of actions the government must take if it’s serious.
“I’m sure the Israeli ambassador in Wellington is happily reporting to his ministry in Tel Aviv that the New Zealand government is still tolerating mass starvation, bombing civilians and ethnic cleansing.” Minto says.
“If the New Zealand government was serious, it would implement this list”:
Back the call from UN Special Rapporteur for the OPT, Francesca Albanese for military protection for aid convoys to enter Gaza.
Close the Israeli embassy in Wellington
End trade and investment ties with Israel
Deny entry visas for all Israeli Defence Forces personnel
Introduce legislation to sanction Israel the same as the Russia Sanctions Act
Cease approval for Rakon to export crystal oscillators which may be used by the Israeli military for targeting Gaza and other Israeli assault zones
Ban all Rocket Lab launches of satellites used for Israeli reconnaissance over Gaza
Suspend all bilateral agreements with Israel; movie co-production, overflight agreement and technological cooperation
Stop remittances going to Israel, such as funds for the racist Jewish National Fund
Cut scientific, academic, sport and cultural ties with the State of Israel
Sell all New Zealand’s Superfund investments in Israeli companies
Vote to suspend Israeli membership of the United Nations for not withdrawing from all the Occupied Palestinian Territory
Cease approving Israeli munitions transporter ZIM Shipping using our ports
Join the case against Israeli genocide in the International Court of Justice
Sign onto the Hague Group of countries working to ensure Israel complies with International Law https://thehaguegroup.org/home/
Five things you can do now for Palestine…
1) Copy and Paste this letter to the minister and copy in your local MP
Rt Hon Winston Peters
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Parliament Buildings
Wellington
Kia ora Mr Peters,
After Israel’s 77 years of ethnic cleansing, apartheid policies and brutal military occupation of Palestine your statement to parliament on Tuesday this week was pitiful.
Mass killing and mass starvation of Palestinians is happening in real time before our eyes and still you only have words to offer – words that understate Israel’s culpability for the most appalling of war crimes – the mass killing and mass starvation of Palestinians in Gaza.
Israel ignores your words Mr Peters because they have never been followed with accountability actions.
If you are serious about doing all we can to stop the mass killing and mass starvation of Palestinians then do these things. Now.
1. Back the call from UN Special Rapporteur for the OPT, Francesca Albanese for military protection for aid convoys to enter Gaza.
2. Close the Israeli embassy in Wellington
3. End trade and investment ties with Israel
4. Deny entry visas for all Israeli Defence Force personnel

PSNA media release for the campaign launch:
PSNA to target Sodastream in Noel Leeming outlets for ‘complicity with Israeli genocide, apartheid and land grabbing’
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa is launching a nationwide campaign against stockists of carbonated drink machines produced by the Israeli company Sodastream.
PSNA says its action is part of the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement to isolate apartheid Israel while it commits genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza.
PSNA Co-Chair Maher Nazzal won’t reveal when the ‘active campaign’ might start, but he does say that the Noel Leeming retail chain is to be the first target.
“We wrote to Noel Leeming’s parent company, the Warehouse, on 25 March, reminding them of their Ethical Sourcing Policy, which states;
“Like our customers, we care about doing the right thing – not only here in New Zealand but everywhere we operate.
Our aim is to ensure our customers have confidence that our products have been ethically sourced.’
“We didn’t get a reply. It seems their ethical policy is just a public relations whitewash.”
Nazzal says Sodastream previously manufactured its machines near Ma'ale Adumim, one of the most notorious illegal Israeli settlements on the West Bank, which was built over destroyed Palestinian villages.
“Sodastream denied it at the time, but the pressure from international customers forced Sodastream to relocate its factory to near Rahat in the Nagab desert in Southern Israel.”
Nazzal says the Sodastream stain remains.
“Sodastream built its new factory on traditional Bedouin land. In 1948, the Israeli army expelled most of the nomadic Bedouin from Palestine. Ever since then, Israel has attempted to drive the remaining Bedouin into Bantustan shanty towns so Israelis can occupy the rest of their land.”
“Some Bedouin have had their villages destroyed by the Israeli army dozens of times.”
“The Israeli government subsidises industrial plants and towns in the Nagab, to ‘improve the demographic balance’ in favour of Jewish immigrants. It’s just the same apartheid as in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” Nazzal says.
“Israeli companies can exploit local Palestinian labour, just as easily as they can if they were operating in the West Bank.”
“Sodastream boasts that it is also exploiting local prison labour. I think that is a great thing to publicise.”
Nazzal says the PSNA action against SodaStream shouldn’t be necessary.
“Our government should be sanctioning Israel for its genocide and apartheid. It has obligations set by the International Court of Justice, which it completely ignores.”
Nazzal says civic boycotts work.
“The best example in this country was the campaign against apartheid South Africa, especially against the Springbok Tour in 1981.”
“Much more recently, only last year, the Israeli parent company of Obela food dips sold its brand. It reluctantly admitted that part of the reason was the consumer boycott of Obella as an Israeli product.”
“Though Obela sales in countries such as Aotearoa New Zealand didn’t fall that much, it was enough to cause an Israeli identity brand crisis. Obela is still on sale here, but is no longer an Israeli company and isn’t sending profits back to Israel anymore.”
Nazzal says the initial target is Noel Leeming, but the campaign will also be moving to other retail chains which stock Sodastream, such as Briscoes and New World.
“We hope they will see ethical reason and realise why it’s not in the long-term interests of their respective brands to continue to stock Sodastream

Government’s Jewish Muslim ‘Harmony Initiative’ helps Israeli campaign to redefine Palestine conflict
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa says a just-signed government-produced ‘Harmony Initiative’ will help in Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu’s recently announced ‘Eighth War Front’.
This is an Israeli government propaganda campaign to present Israel’s brutal assault on Palestinians as a response to global antisemitism.
Netanyahu has likened Israel’s worldwide ‘information war’ to its physical attacks on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, neighbouring Arab countries, and Iran.
The Israeli aim is to silence its overseas critics.
Some Jewish and Muslim groups have signed onto the ‘Harmony Initiative’ which describes its purpose as to foster ‘positive relationships’ and set up a Muslim-Jewish Council.
The government says it wants to avoid what it calls ‘domestic impacts resulting from overseas conflicts’.
But PSNA CO-Chair Maher Nazzal says that is code for the government trying to defuse protest against Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
“You can’t see any references in this ‘Harmony Initiative’ to supporting the implementation of international humanitarian law or the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for example.”
“Instead, we get the Muslim-Jewish Council having an obligation to ‘publicly challenge expressions of hate’.”
“There will be some people sitting on that Council who believe any expressed support of Palestinian rights is hate speech. One of the ‘Harmony Initiative’ signatories is the Holocaust Foundation. The Holocaust Foundation is funded by the Israeli embassy.”
“If you put various government moves together, there is a clear agenda to stifle criticism of Israel.”
“Amendments to the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002 are under secret consultation, but with a clear signal that the recent draconian suppression of free speech on Palestine we have just seen in the UK is very much a model on the list for us too.”
“The Human Rights Commissioner, a self-confessed Israel supporter, wants to appoint an Antisemitism Envoy because they have one in Australia. But the antisemitism test they are using there is a list of examples of criticising Israel.”
Nazzal says he can understand why some community groups in Aotearoa New Zealand have signed on to the ‘Harmony Initiative’.
“The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand for instance, quite rightly believe that if they are not on this ‘Muslim-Jewish Council’ then the government would simply create and appoint another Muslim body to purportedly represent Muslims. That would leave FIANZ with no input.”
A news snippet…
As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drags the assault on Gaza through its second year, civilians have protested his government and soldiers have refused to show up for reserve duty. With an estimated 100,000 Israeli soldiers refusing service, volunteers from the U.S. and other countries provide reinforcements. Last year, the Israeli military estimated that at least 23,000 American citizens were currently serving, a combination of lone soldiers and Americans who immigrated to Israel with their families.
Joint statement from the Hague Group
We, representatives of Palestinian civil society, welcome the Joint Statement of the Hague Group Emergency Conference on Palestine, endorsed by 12 states committed to advancing concrete measures to uphold obligations under international law as a crucial step to end Israel’s ongoing genocide, apartheid, and occupation.
Israel’s plan for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza revealed
This story is here on Haaretz but is paywalled so we are reproducing this piece from Gideon Levy in full here:
Adolf Eichmann began his Nazi career as the head of the Central Agency for Jewish Emigration at the security agency charged with protecting the Reich. Joseph Brunner, the father of Mossad chief David Barnea, was three years old when he fled Nazi Germany with his parents, before the evacuation plan was implemented.
Last week, Barnea, the grandson, visited Washington in order to discuss the "evacuation" of the Gaza Strip's population. Barak Ravid reported on Channel 12 News that Barnea told his interlocutors that Israel has already begun talks with three countries on this issue, and the irony of history hid its face in shame. A grandson of a refugee of ethnic cleansing in Germany discusses ethnic cleansing, and no memory comes to mind.
In order to "evacuate" two million people from their country, you need a plan. Israel has been working on one. The first stage involves transferring much of the population into a concentration camp in order to facilitate an efficient deportation.
Last week, the BBC published an investigative report based on satellite photos, showing systematic destruction carried out by the IDF across the Gaza Strip. Village after village is being wiped off the face of the earth, which is being flattened for the sake of constructing the concentration camp, so that life in Gaza will no longer be possible.
Preparations for the first Israeli concentration camp are in full swing. Systematic destruction is proceeding throughout the enclave so that there is nowhere to return to other than the concentration camp.
In order to carry out this work, bulldozers are required. The BBC presented two wanted ads. One described "a project involving the demolition of buildings in Gaza requires (40-ton) bulldozer operators. The job includes payment of 1,200 shekels ($357) a day, including food and lodging, with an option of obtaining a private vehicle." The second ad said that "work hours are Sunday to Thursday, from 7 A.M. to 4:45 P.M., with excellent working conditions."
Israel is quietly perpetrating a crime against humanity. Not a house here and a house there, no "operational necessities," but a systematic elimination of any chance of life there, while preparing the infrastructure for concentrating people in a "humanitarian" city intended to be a transit camp – before deportation to Libya, Ethiopia and Indonesia, the destinations Barnea specified, according to Channel 12.
That is the plan for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. Someone conceived it, there were discussions of pros and cons, alternatives were suggested, options of total cleansing vs. stages, and all done in air-conditioned conference rooms with minutes taken and decisions made. For the first time since the war of revenge in Gaza began, it's clear that Israel has a plan – and it's a far-reaching one.
This is no longer a rolling war. One can no longer accuse Benjamin Netanyahu of waging a war with no purpose. There is a purpose to this war, and it's a criminal one. One can no longer tell army commanders that their troops are dying for no reason: They are dying in a war of ethnic cleansing.
The ground is ready, one can move to the transfer of people, the want ads are on their way. After moving the population is completed, and the residents of the humanitarian city start missing their lives among the ruins, amid hunger, disease and bombing, it will be possible to move to the final stage: forcible placement on trucks and planes en route to the new and longed-for homeland – Libya, Indonesia or Ethiopia.
If the humanitarian aid enterprise took the lives of hundreds of people, the deportation will take the lives of tens of thousands. But nothing will block Israel on its way to realizing its plan.
Yes, there is a plan, and it's more diabolical than it appears to be. At some point, people sat down and concocted this plot. It would be naïve to think that all this happened on its own. In 50 years, the minutes will be released, and we will learn who was in favor and who opposed this plan. Who thought of perhaps leaving one hospital intact.
Along with the officers and politicians, there were also engineers, architects, demographers and people from the budget division. Maybe there were representatives from the Health Ministry. We will find out all in 50 years.
Meanwhile, the head of the Central Agency for Palestinian Emigration, David Barnea, has implemented an additional stage. He is an obedient senior official, having never caused friction with those above him. Does that sound familiar? He is the hero of the campaign for mass amputations through walkie-talkies. If you send him to save hostages, he goes. If you send him to prepare the deportation of millions of people? Not a problem for him. After all, he is only obeying orders.
150 New Zealand writers speak out
Press Release 21 July 2025
Today an open letter was sent to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters from 150 of Aotearoa’s writers, demanding they take urgent action regarding the atrocities in Gaza.
‘We ask all people to join in our call for compassion, for reason and for mediation.
“For the over 57,000 Gazans killed, and for the survivors — starving, wounded, and scarred for life:
We demand the immediate unrestricted distribution of food and medical aid throughout Gaza by the UN.
We demand that sanctions be imposed on the State of Israel if the Israeli government does not heed this call, which is also the world’s call, for an immediate ceasefire.
We demand a ceasefire which guarantees safety and justice for all Palestinians, the release of all Israeli hostages, and the release of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners arbitrarily held in Israeli jails.”
“This genocide implicates us all. We bear witness to the crimes of genocide, and we refuse to approve them by our silence.”
The full letter and list of signatories are below.

From the Hind Rajab Foundation this week
BREAKING: In a historic move, Belgian police arrested and interrogated two Israeli soldiers at Tomorrowland following a legal complaint by the Hind Rajab Foundation and GLAN, citing credible allegations of war crimes in Gaza. The suspects were later released, but Belgium has officially opened a criminal investigation — marking a major breakthrough in the application of universal jurisdiction.
This is more than an isolated action. It sets a powerful precedent:
🔹 Western soil is no longer guaranteed impunity
🔹 Universal jurisdiction is becoming a reality
🔹 Governments can no longer ignore credible evidence of atrocity crimes

Flying Paper – new film on vimeo
The film "Flying Paper" (see link below) is the uplifting, yet somewhat poignant story of Palestinian children in Gaza on a quest to shatter the Guinness World Record for the most kites ever flown. The film which was produced 11 years ago demonstrates the creative fortitude of these children making and flying kites despite the severe deprivations imposed by Israel upon the people of Gaza at that point.
In the wake of the GENOCIDAL SLAUGHTER AND STARVATION of the besieged civilian population over the past 21 months, one cannot help but reflect upon the utter barbarity of those responsible for killing and maiming tens of thousands children like those in the film. Their lives, however humble, were full of laughter, with hopes and dreams for a better future. Now these lives have been utterly destroyed in a GENOCIDAL FRENZY BY ISRAEL that is beyond our worst imagining. 😢
NOTHING! NOTHING!! ....CAN JUSTIFY THIS BARBARIC HOLOCAUST OF PALESTINIAN CIVILIANS !!! 😡

New Zealand International Film Festival – two good films
Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk
This documentary from Iranian director Sepideh Farsi captures life in Gaza during the Israeli military bombardment, largely through Farsi’s video calls with Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassouna. Tragically, just one day after Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk was announced for Cannes Film Festival 2025, Hassouna - and nine members of her family - were killed in an Israeli airstrike. It’s an on-the-ground confrontation with the impact of war, and now exists as a heartbreaking time-capsule of one journalist’s bravery in the face of mass violence.

Remember possible action for local groups
For groups affiliated to PSNA we suggest the following actions could be taken at any time in support of this campaign
Asking your local backpacker accommodation to display the poster and draw it to the attention of any Israeli soldiers here on “rest and recreation” from the genocide.
Pasting the hotline poster (use the version in this newsletter which includes a contact email) around the vicinity of backpacker venues in your local area. This is already happening in some areas.
Hand out flyers to people in the vicinity of your local backpackers
Contact us on the hotline if you come across Israeli soldiers

Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign?
We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
