Israel blocks NZ aid to starving Palestinians
Up to $29 million worth of aid provided by New Zealand is held up on the Gaza border by Israel, says the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa.
PSNA says this aid is loaded on some of the 9,000 aid trucks sitting ready to try to lift the Israeli created famine. Three months ago, Israel cut off all food, medicine, fuel, and nearly all water supplies entering Gaza.
Famine has begun and the UN has cited 14,000 babies at imminent risk of starving to death. It estimates 600 truckloads of aid a day is necessary to feed the people in Gaza. Gaza’s own food production has been destroyed by Israel.
Some 70 percent of Gaza is already occupied by Israel or under Israeli evacuation orders.
New Zealand Foreign Minister, Winston Peters last week said the humanitarian situation in Gaza is ‘simply intolerable’.
But PSNA Co-Chair, John Minto says that since then, as Israel refused to allow more than a trickle of aid into Gaza, and instead escalated its already horrific military onslaught, Peters’ only public statement has been to offer condolences for the shooting of two Israeli diplomats in Washington.
“Our government’s selective indifference to mass murder is making all of us complicit.”
Minto says New Zealand has taken a lead in the past and must do so again.
“Our government should be advocating internationally for the enforcement of a protective no-fly zone over Gaza, and a multinational military protection for aid convoys so they can go into Gaza whether Israel approves them or not.”
“At home we should be sending Israel an equally clear message. We must send the Israeli ambassador packing and immediately sanction Israel by ending all trade and other links,” Minto says.
“As each day passes with no concrete action from New Zealand, our government is linking us with the most massive and ongoing war crime of the 21st century.”
“Our government will never live down it’s complicity but might salvage some credibility by acting now.”

To All Government MPs:
Will your political legacy be complicity with the most horrendous war crimes of the 21st Century?
After almost three months of Israel’s total blockade of food, water, fuel and medical supplies into Gaza your government finally spoke out last week to say the situation is ‘simply intolerable’.
But, as for the past 18 months, your government has not uttered a single word of condemnation of Israel for its blatant war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The Holocaust was the defining human rights issue of the 20th century.
Palestine in the defining human rights issue of the 21st century.
Will your political legacy be complicity with the most horrendous war crimes of the 21st Century?
Palestine needs New Zealand condemnation of Israeli war crimes such as deliberately starving a civilian population. It needs a no-fly zone over Occupied Gaza to prevent further industrial scale killing of civilians. And it needs sanctions against Israel – send the Israeli ambassador home.
Please respond urgently and without meaningless platitudes.

Meeting National MP Dana Fitzpatrick
National MP Dana Fitzpatrick on the left in blue
Palestine solidarity supporters me with Dana Fitzpatrick in a local Gisborne café this week to encourage her to support the Green Party’s “Unlawful Occupation of Palestine” sanctions bill while would apply sanctions to Israel for its horrendous war crimes in Occupied Gaza.
The bill is a modest start to sanctioning Israel for its genocide in Gaza.
This is part of a nationwide effort to encourage all National MPs to finally sanction Israel by supporting the Green Party’s bill.
The Gisborne group report that:
“Ms Kirkpatrick fell short of accepting genocide is occurring, but agreed the situation in Gaza is dire. She seemed agreeable to taking the word of credible, neutral organisations – like Amnesty International, like Doctors Without Borders, like the International Court of Justice, on this point.
Even so, the most Ms Kirkpatrick promised was to take our message back to her colleagues. She was frank that she would not support the Bill: government foreign policy, she explained, is not made on the strength of private members’ Bills.
Government foreign policy to date on Israel’s 17-month-long genocide amounts to precisely nothing. A solitary travel ban on the worst culprits inciting hatred and violence in the West Bank.
As real as the genocide in Gaza, is the fact that Israel will not stop until it is made to stop. Until the international community treats it like the pariah state it has become.
It is not as if sanctions against Israel would conflict with New Zealand’s position: we are, after all, party to the Geneva Convention on genocide. Only last September, New Zealand ratified a United Nations General Assembly resolution holding Israel’s occupation of Palestine to be unlawful, and calling on member states to use their leverage to bring it to an end.
Sanctions would simply give effect to this policy. To say, at a time Israel has killed the equivalent of every man, woman and child in Te Tairāwhiti, enough is enough. End the madness.
Law without enforcement is toothless. Palestinian genocide apart, enforcing international humanitarian law is indisputably in New Zealand’s best interests.
Dana feels like she cannot support the Bill. We disagree. We believe we share common values. That she can make a difference. That the time for action is NOW.
Invercargill make successful presentation to their city council
Dr Anna Palliser and Alistair Smith present for Palestine
Big congratulations to Invercargill!
Invercargill supporters this afternoon won a commitment for a council staff report on changing their procurement policy to exclude companies complicit in illegal Israeli settlements. The report will come to a future council meeting for a final vote.
It was a great presentation and they handled the questions really well. You can watch the livestream of the presentation at the start of the meeting here:
https://www.youtube.com/invercargillcitycouncil
Supporters packed the public gallery and gathered outside after the presentation.
And here is how it was reported in the Otago Daily Times:
More Government Double Standards on Palestine as it Greenlights Escalating Genocide
Maher Nazzal
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa is accusing Foreign Minister, Winston Peters of blatant double standards and giving Israel the green-light for its escalating
attacks on Gaza.
PSNA Co-Chair, Maher Nazzal says Peters publicly deplored the shooting of two Israeli Embassy staff in Washington last week, yet he kept silent on the killing of nine Palestinian children of the Al Najjar family in Khan Younis in a single Israeli airstrike just two days later.
Late last week, Peters expressed his sympathy to the Israeli government, tweeting on behalf of the New Zealand government ‘Our thoughts are with their loved ones’.
Nazzal says months go by in Gaza without a word of objection from Peters that Israel is still starving the whole population in Gaza and carpet bombing them.
“Just over a week ago, top genocide scholars from around the world were unanimous in assessing Israel’s actions amount to genocide.”
“Mr Peters’ sympathies are, at least, consistent. He has sided with Israel from day one to the present.”
“I suspect Peters is letting his prejudices run amok as his term in office runs out,” Nazzal says. “Surely many, if not most, government MPs will be sickened by his sympathy towards representatives of the Israeli government, and mostly silence on the deaths of innocent Palestinians.”
Nazzal says PSNA reiterates its call for New Zealand to impose wide-ranging and immediate sanctions on Israel.
“Israel has been happy to ignore the half-heated and pro-forma posturing by western governments over the past 19 months. Tel Aviv will interpret Peters’ tweet as a subtle but clear diplomatic signal that its ok by Winston Peters that it can escalate its carnage in Gaza.”

Quotes of the week
“In Gaza, there are dozens of “Napalm Girl” moments each day, and they don’t come filtered through distant photo wires or delayed coverage. They come live. … Burned children, screaming fathers, headless infants – these images are not just real, they are relentless.”
“The images from Gaza are not less powerful than the Napalm Girl – they are just less politically useful to those in power.”

Keep spreading the message about the Genocide Hotline!
Remember possible action for local groups
For groups affiliated to PSNA we suggest the following actions could be taken at any time in support of this campaign
Asking your local backpacker accommodation to display the poster and draw it to the attention of any Israeli soldiers here on “rest and recreation” from the genocide.
Pasting the hotline poster (use the version in this newsletter which includes a contact email) around the vicinity of backpacker venues in your local area. This is already happening in some areas.
Hand out flyers to people in the vicinity of your local backpackers
Contact us on the hotline if you come across Israeli soldiers

We will need some serious money to make our campaign as effective as possible. For example, we will need somewhere in the vicinity of $25,000 to bring speakers to New Zealand over the next year and organise large public meetings to help spread the message.
You can help. Are you able to donate a cup of coffee a month to the campaign? In other words, can you afford to make an automatic payment of $5 per month to support the Palestinian struggle? (If you can afford more that would be great!)
