I’m surprised PSNA’s request that for you to speak out against mass killing and starvation in Gaza has been rejected because you say our request “falls outside your mission”.

Surely the lesson of Never Again from the Holocaust must mean Never Again for all peoples at all times.

Despite refusing to speak out to condemn Israel’s war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of genocide, you have commentary on your website which

Denies there is a genocide in Gaza – despite the consensus of genocide scholars that Gaza is “textbook” case of genocide
Calls for the release of all Israeli hostages – but not the thousands of Palestinian hostages held in Israeli prisons on detention without trial
Calls for the disarming of Hamas – but not the IDF committing the most appalling of war crimes

It seems all your public statements are precisely aligned with Israeli government propaganda points. There is not a single word of criticism of Israel or the most appalling genocidal statements, and actions, from Israeli political and military leaders.

There is a moral disconnect between your advocacy for education on the Holocaust but refusal to speak out in condemnation of Israel. This makes your organisation uniquely unsuitable to provide Holocaust education in New Zealand schools.

As Naomi Klein says “Side with the child over the gun every single time. No matter whose gun, no matter whose child”. In Gaza you are siding with the gun over the child.

Our school children deserve better than your selective, morally inept “Never again” lessons from the Holocaust and we request you end your engagement with the Ministry of Education and cease your engagement in education of New Zealand school children.

It’s been 71 days and you still appear to be “studying” the United Nations Independent Commission report on the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel

Is this report in your inbox or do you need to retrieve it from the rubbish bin?

Surely it can’t be that hard. This is the report which found Israeli Defence Force (IDF) soldiers were engaged in a “game” of target practice with “different body parts of children being targeted on different days”.

Don’t shame New Zealand any more with your silence.

Launching the Free Palestine Party

Free Palestine Party meets with Sumud Committee in Gaza

On August 22nd 2026, members of the Free Palestine Party (FPP) met with the Palestinian National Commission for Resilience and Unity (Sumud) in Gaza via Zoom. Despite connectivity issues which caused interruptions, the meeting was fruitful and eye-opening. It opened up the possibility of people-to-people connections between activists in Aotearoa and community leaders living under conditions of genocide in Gaza.

After exchanging introductions and clarifying the Free Palestine Party's goals, the Sumud committee from Gaza appraised us on the situation in Gaza and communicated their hopefulness regarding our initiative to form the Free Palestine Party. It was an invaluable experience for us to learn from excellent Palestinian community leaders living in tents, and working tirelessly to improve the conditions of their fellow Palestinians facing genocide.

Among the many moving testimonies was that of the co-ordinator of women and child activities for the Sumud committee. She said that approximately 28,000 women in Gaza have been widowed. Mothers spend their time fighting for survival when basic necessities like water and food are diffucult to find. Children, who would otherwise be in school, are now helping their mothers in this battle for survival as their schools and homes remain destroyed. Women who were teachers and nurses before, are setting up classes and care facilities in displacements camps trying to support their communities amidst the dystopian reality they face each day.

From nothing, Gazan women are still trying to provide for their families. Without fresh food or meat, they have to cook using limited supplies of canned food. Children who should be learning in their classrooms are carrying large containers and waiting in lines for water. They endure freezing cold and burnng heat in their tents with little shelter from the elements. Razan hopes to be part of the solution, and hopes that building solidarity with people across the world will help further the cause of Palestinian children and women.

Razan's eloquence, conviction and leadership showed the Aotearoa team that Israel's narrative about the position of women in Palestinian society was false. Palestinian women are at the forefront of the struggle against genocide as leaders.

Sumud committee members emphasised their commitment and hopes for a future founded on values of equality, sovereignty, and international law. Both sides concluded by expressing hope in the just Palestinian struggle for liberation, recognising the connected nature of our struggles globally, and resolving to stay in touch and to support each other however possible.

The meeting was attended by Free Palestine President Paul Hopkinson, Secretary John Edmunson, Treasurer Ben England and members Yasser Abdulaal, John Minto, Josephine Varghese

Palestine solidarity in University workers employment negotiations

University workers have included a claim for action on Palestine in their current collective employment agreement negotiations.

“Thanks to the collective action everyone has taken so far we have reached the point where we have a claim as part of the collective bargaining currently underway at six universities. The claim is that “The Employer shall direct Unisaver to not invest in firms or entities directly involved in, or benefiting from, commercial activities or actions that may constitute breaches of human rights or acts of genocide.”

We have prepared a document outlining why this claim is appropriate and how we can address objections to it. This document has been sent to all bargaining teams.

Because so many of our universities are bargaining we have a critical mass to call for meaningful divestment of Unisaver funds”

‘Moral collapse’ opts NZ out of condemnation of Israeli settlements

The absence of a New Zealand government signature on a 22-member joint statement, which is condemning the E1 Israeli settlement in the Occupied West Bank, can only be interpreted as a ‘moral collapse’ in our foreign policy, according to the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa.

The recent joint statement was issued by the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the European Commission.

The statement condemned the decision by the Israeli Higher Planning Committee to approve plans for settlement construction in the E1 area, East of Jerusalem, as ‘unacceptable and a violation of international law’.

The E1 settlement would divide the Occupied West Bank into two regions – northern and southern.

PSNA spokesperson, Rinad Tamimi says the New Zealand’s government’s absence from the statement is even worse, in the context of the statement specifically citing UN Security Council Resolution 2334, describing the settlements as a “flagrant breach of international law.”

“The Key/English National Party government co-sponsored this resolution at the UN Security Council in 2016. But the Luxon National Party, even after the genocide in Gaza in the past three years, can’t even bother to put its name to this recent condemnation,” Tamimi says.

“In the nuanced world of world of international diplomacy, Israel will be taking favourable note of New Zealand’s slide into not caring what atrocities Israel is committing.”

“Without taking any other action, Foreign Minister Winston Peters has always made of point of saying he often ‘made his concerns known’ to Israel. Now he’s even given up on that.”

Tamimi is also concerned that none of New Zealand’s political parties have specific policies to support Palestine in their election manifestos.

Tamimi says Israel’s genocide in Gaza is the worst atrocity of the 21st century.

“While there is meant to be a functioning ceasefire, the latest news from Gaza is that Israel has reoccupied more than 70 percent of Gaza, Israeli forces have resumed their assault because children in Gaza were flying kites. And on the Occupied West Bank Israeli settlers are openly beating up foreign network journalists with impunity.”

New Zealand has practical and significant symbolic leverage against Israel which it deliberately has decided not to use.”

“As you would expect, all three coalition parties, pretend there is no such thing as foreign policy.”

“Labour, Greens and Te Pāti Māori have expressed support for Palestine, including imposing sanctions.”

“But they need to clearly state what type and level of sanctions. Even the present government can say its immigration bans on West Bank terrorist settlers constitutes a sanction.”

“It all amounts to just election rhetoric, without announcing specific and meaningful sanctions in all areas; trade, investment, diplomatic, military and immigration,” Tamimi says.

“Without sanctions, genocide, ethnic cleansing, and the Greater Israel project, are all still licenced for Israel to action.”

New Zealand did sign a letter criticising Israel which foreshadows sanctions

PSNA points to a hint of future economic sanctions against Israel, in a statement of concern issued jointly by New Zealand, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway and Canada just over a week ago.

New Zealand did not put its name to another second and stronger statement of condemnation, against Israel constructing the highly strategic E1 settlement on the Occupied West Bank. The second statement was issued at the same time, and had been signed by 22 western countries.

All the countries who signed the second letter, except New Zealand and Germany, also signed the first one.

PSNA spokesperson, Rinad Tamimi, says ether New Zealand was deliberately identifying and aligning with Germany, which is Israel’s third largest arms supplier.

“Or, more likely, it’s National outsourcing its foreign policy to New Zealand First, whose leader is blatantly pro-Israel. That haphazard arrangement results in mixed and ambiguous messages for the world and for New Zealanders.”

But Tamimi says there is a suggestion of economic sanctions in the second statement which did have New Zealand’s signature.

The statement states ‘businesses should not consider bidding for construction tenders. They should be aware of legal and reputational consequences, including the risk of involving themselves in various breaches of international law’.

Tamimi says this warning to presumably local companies in each country, is a notice that the governments of the signatory countries, could bring legal proceedings or amend legislation to thwart these companies.

“If governments follow this through, this is hugely important for investment funds in New Zealand which operate under Acts of Parliament, such as the Super Fund, ACC and KiwiSavers.

“The Super Fund lost a court case earlier this year, due to its attempts to keep investing in companies profiting from Israeli West Bank settlements. The writing is on the wall for other investors in Israel.”

“Investment in genocide and apartheid Israel is neither a prudent nor moral choice for anyone.”

Holocaust Centre refuses to condemn mass killing and starvation in Gaza

In light of the report of the United Nations Independent Commission report on the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel which condemned the Israeli Defence Force for deliberate killing and maiming of Palestinian children we wrote the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand asking them to join in condemning Israeli war crimes.

We said that the lesson of “never again” from on the Holocaust must mean “never again” for all peoples at all times The response from the Holocaust Centre was brief and chilling. It seems the lesson of “never again” applies only selectively.

We have asked the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand to therefore end its education programmes in New Zealand schools. Our children deserve much better (See the “One click” letter in the action points at the start of this newsletter)

Calling all social studies teachers!

We are pleased to say the new Year 10 Social Studies curriculum which was released last week includes important changes sought by PSNA in a lengthy submission we made to the Ministry of Education earlier this year.

We support study of the Holocaust in the curriculum but giving it a broader context. If the main lesson from the Holocaust is NEVER AGAIN then this must apply to all peoples at all times. The final curriculum is here.

PSNA is very keen to develop, alongside teachers, high-quality resources for the delivery of this section of the curriculum. We’d love to hear from you if you are a teacher with the time and energy to help develop these resources. Please contact secretary@psna.nz if you are able to help.

Provision for least mobile marchers

On Tuesday, 1 September 34 enthusiastic activists of all ages meet and immediately began to energetically organise to build a landmark demonstration as part of the Global Mobilisation for Palestine to have demonstrations in every country on Saturday, 10 October.

The group decided that banner headline will be “Global March for Palestine with the main issue: “End complicity of the New Zealand Government - End New Zealand’s support for Israeli genocide.”

We are keen to encourage the formal endorsement and active support from a wide range of organisation and individuals. Along with this, each organisation is urged to mobilise their own members by promoting and campaigning in their own organisations and communities to encourage members to come to the march, bring whanau, friends, and the wider public.

Generic resources: Social media posters, leaflets and more will start being available on Thursday 3 Sept. However, all organisations are most welcome to produce their own materials to encourage members and public to come to the march.

“How to sell a genocide” – Book Review by Don Carson

How to sell a Genocide
Author: Adam H. Johnson

This book has just been swept off the shelves of the Waverly City Library in Sydney by ‘outraged’ and ‘upset’ Zionists.

It’s a supreme irony of any such in-depth and forensic analysis of how the Israeli lobby manipulates and cancels media and politicians. Israeli acolytes treat any exposure of Israeli bias and lobby-cancelling as a recipe to follow.

Their argument goes “it’s so outrageously antisemitic to claim that we conspire to ban books, that we demand any book which states this should be banned,”

It’s not surprising that American journalist Adam H. Johnson struck such a nerve with Sydney information gatekeepers with his recent volume.

He has written an excellent and painstaking quantitative breakdown of the bias of the US media towards Israel, comparable to the Centre for Media Monitoring exposure of the BBC bias against Palestine a year ago.

Johnson concentres his attention on where it matters – the conglomerate media giants such as Fox News and the New York Times. For instance, he documents their standard use of particular expressions, such as ‘massacre’ to describe Palestinian actions, but very rarely to categorise Israeli actions.

These western thought (sic) leaders determine our mainstream news paradigms too.

Not that Johnson has written a dry book. His targeted excoriation is the ‘liberal’ Atlantic magazine, for which “a crucial role in defending and opening up ideological and political space for the genocide in Gaza cannot be overstated.’

Its writers pretend to be academic and open minded, yet slavishly follow the Israeli paradigm. Johnson makes it wry entertaining reading.

The Voice of Hind Rajab – screening in cinemas around the country now

In The Voice of Hind Rajab, the voice in question is a small one, belonging to a young girl alone and in unconscionable peril, high and breathless with fear and confusion. But it cuts through Kaouther Ben Hania’s film with piercing clarity, largely because, in contrast to a surrounding chorus of frantic adult voices, it isn’t performed. Rather, it’s a real-life recording of the last words ever spoken by Rajab, a 5-year-old Palestinian child killed on Jan. 29, 2024, after her family’s car was shelled by Israeli forces during their invasion of the Gaza Strip. In her final hours, the girl repeatedly phoned call-center volunteers at the Palestine Red Crescent Society, pleading for a rescue vehicle that never made it to her.

Making that horrifying 70-minute audio file the heart and spine of her film, Ben Hania baldly confronts her audience with the real-time fate of one of more than 18,000 children killed so far in an ongoing genocide.

The doctor’s wife – new screenings

The number of screenings around the country is increasing steadily – 3 in Auckland last week – some with audiences of 70-80 . Retirement villages have been especially keen and have requested repeat visits as word has spread. Donations have flowed into the charity Alan and Hazel Kerr set up and $200,000 has been raised so far. The money was initially spent on heavy duty tents in Gaza but also some funds for a medical team from NZ to go to the Occupied West Bank when possible.

Your KiwiSaver may be funding violations of Palestinian rights

The judgement won by PSNA forcing the NZ Super Fund to review its investments in four companies that violate the rights of Palestinian people was important. It also sends a warning across the bow of KiwiSaver and other investment funds funds. You may not realise it, but your KiwiSaver might be invested in those four companies.

Mindful Money is a charity that tracks investment in KiwiSaver, including companies on the United Nations Human Rights Council database of companies involved in the building and maintenance of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land. Our analysis shows there is even more invested in the four companies by KiwiSaver funds than by the NZ Super Fund.

So what can you do? Check your fund – it is free, quick and easy to do so. Go to www.mindfulmoney.nz, type in the name of your KiwiSaver fund into the Fund Checker, click the button ‘Show Companies’ and look for the companies with an OPT symbol. If you see any of those companies in your fund, write to your fund manager (the address is on your KiwiSaver statement) and tell them you don’t want your savings going to those companies.

If you want to shift to a fund that doesn’t invest in those companies, use the Fund Finder to find a Mindful Ethical Fund. You can also use the same website for non-KiwiSaver managed funds.

It’s your money. Don’t let it be used to fund companies that violate human rights.
