Will New Zealand back the Israel/US at the ICC this week or will it back international law?

We are urging you to vote against the removal of the International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, and instead insist that proper judicial process be followed regarding allegations made against him.

This is a pivotal moment for the International Criminal Court and New Zealand must stand up for our values and our support for international law. We are not making any judgement on the allegations against Mr Khan, but New Zealand must insist a proper judicial process be followed.

When allegations were made against Khan, the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), was asked by the president of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) to gather evidence from the alleged victims. Between November 2024 and December 2025 more than 5,000 pages of evidence was gathered. The ICC then established a Judicial Panel, comprising three eminent judges selected by the Bureau of the ASP, to analyse the evidence.

After doing so this Judicial Panel declared they were “unanimously of the opinion that the factual findings by OIOS do not establish misconduct or breach of duty under the relevant legal framework”.

Now Israel and the US are rejecting the Judicial Panel findings and are insisting he be sacked.

The New Zealand government has already failed numerous times to uphold international law in the face of Israeli/US pressure.”

This is the report which found that it appears the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) soldiers were engaged in a “game” of target practice with “different body parts of children being targeted on different days”.

PSNA has written to the Prime Minister today urging the government to vote against the removal of the International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, and instead insist that proper judicial process be followed regarding allegations made against him.

“This is a pivotal moment for the International Criminal Court and New Zealand must stand up for our values and our support for international law” says PSNA Spokesperson Rinad Tamimi. “We are not making any judgement on the allegations against Mr Khan, but New Zealand must insist a proper judicial process be followed”

Tamimi says that Now Israel and the US are rejecting the Judicial Panel findings.

“They are blatantly lobbying to remove Karim Khan because he sought arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for ‘war crimes and crimes against humanity’.”

This intensive Israel/US diplomatic bullying has succeeded in having the Judicial Panel findings set aside in favour of a decision to remove Karim Khan being made by the full Assembly of State Parties (ASP) in which New Zealand will vote.

“Karim Khan’s position must be decided through a legal process, not a political process dictated by Israeli/US lobbying” says Tamimi. “New Zealand has already failed numerous times to uphold international law in the face of Israeli/US pressure.”

“They must not throw in the towel again.”

“In October last year, Foreign Minister Winston Peters issued a formal statement, with Nordic ministers in Stockholm, to ‘reaffirm our unwavering support for the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court’.”

“You can’t pick and choose when you will support international law, and when you can disregard it,” says Tamimi. “New Zealand must do the right thing at the ICC this week.”

New Zealand First frightened by PSNA leaflets at their national conference

It sounds like a script from Monty Python.

PSNA supporters were outside the New Zealand First conference this week giving out leaflets to the delegates going in. Lots of people were keen to read it. So far so good.

But when anyone holding a leaflet went in, New Zealand First officials took the leaflets off them. And neither were they allowed to put the leaflets in their pockets – they had to give them in if they wanted to go into the conference.

One of the attendees who had his leaflet taken from him came back outside and asked a supporter to hide a leaflet in the garden for him so he could get it when he came out. We left the leaflet for him and hope he got it.

Winston Peters is terrified of the Palestine issue dogging him on the campaign trail. We have news for him and it’s not good!

UN latest report on Palestine

* On 14 July, Peace Now reported that the Israeli Government had signed an umbrella agreement committing approximately NIS 8.5 billion for Israeli settlements infrastructure, such as roads and public services, in northern West Bank. According to the organization, the agreement would support the continued development of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

* On 13 July, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) warned of the worsening water crisis in the Gaza Strip, driven by Israeli restrictions on the entry of fuel, equipment, and maintenance materials needed to rehabilitate and operate water facilities. The organization called for access to safe water and other essential services in accordance with international humanitarian law.
* On 13 July, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) published a press release entitled "Israel's Escalating Attacks in Gaza Reflect Consistent Pattern of Genocide." PCHR stated that recent Israeli military operations, including aerial bombardments and attacks on civilian gatherings, displacement tents and vehicles, formed part of what it described as a continuing pattern of violations against the civilian population in Gaza. The organization called for urgent international action to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian access and advance accountability under international law.
* On 8 July, Gisha – Legal Center for Freedom of Movement released a report indicating that Israel continues to hold the bodies of more than 100 Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza, who died in Israeli custody. The report reviews the legal proceedings of three cases relating to Gaza residents who died in detention, exposing authorities’ “failures” such providing families with partial incorrect, and misleading information, prolonged delays in investigations and admission of impossibility to locate the bodies.
* On 6 July, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights stated that the Knesset had failed to adopt legislation seeking to prohibit the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from visiting to Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons. The organization called, inter alia, for the ICRC to be granted immediate and unhindered access to all Palestinian detainees and the full respect of the ICRC mandate.
* On 6 July, Peace Now published a report entitled “Annus Mirabilis – Actions by the Israeli Government to Annex the West Bank, 2023-2025”. The report documents the measures advanced by the Israeli Government, which demonstrates how these measures form a single, systematic government policy aiming to deepen Israeli control over the West Bank and advance de facto annexation, according to Peace Now.
* On 3 July, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) marked one thousand days since 7 October 2023 and the beginning of what PCHR defines a “genocidal campaign” in Gaza. The organization reiterated its call on the international community to take urgent and decisive action to prevent genocide and other international crimes.
* On 16 July, Oxfam published a briefing note entitled "Seven Ways the Water Crisis in Gaza is Hurting Women." The publication examines the disproportionate impact of water shortages and the collapse of water and sanitation services on women and girls in Gaza. It concludes with recommendations about support for gender-responsive, rights-based WASH recovery, and safe and equitable access to water and sanitation.
* On 13 July, Amnesty International criticized the European Union's (EU) failure to suspend the EU - Israel Association Agreement. The organization stated that “if the EU will not act together, member states must act individually and unilaterally suspend all forms of cooperation with Israel that may contribute to its grave violations of international law, including by imposing a comprehensive embargo on the export of arms and surveillance equipment and related technology, and a total ban on trade with and investment in Israel’s illegal settlements” in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
* On 8 July, European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine (ECCP) urged the EU Foreign Affairs Council to adopt sanctions and review EU relations with Israel ahead of the Council’s 13 July meeting.
* On 8 July, Save the Children expressed alarm over reports that four Palestinian children had been killed and several others injured by Israeli forces over the preceding six days, including a 10-year-old child killed in an airstrike while he was in a tent in Gaza. The organization called for urgent international intervention and reiterated that children must be protected during armed conflict in accordance with international law.

**Mazin Qumsiyeh who toured New Zealand two years ago**

Israeli leaders dropped all masks on themselves and their supporters after 7 October 2023. They spoke openly about what they intended to do and how they intended to do it. They argued that suppressing resistance (what they call terrorism) cannot be selective since new generations of colonized Palestinians can resurrect the resistance. So they spoke openly about the genocide and ethnic cleansing and practiced it. The worst holocaust of the 21st century ensued. Hundreds of thousands were killed or injured, 95% of buildings were flattened. Over 200,000 forced out of Gaza to other countries. A smaller scale of this is happening here in the West Bank. The genocidal terrorist regime is backed by the USA whose citizens pay the bill. Since 7 October 2023, US taxpayers paid over $20 billion in direct aid to the genocidal regime. The US government also took over $80 billion more money for its direct intervention in support of genocide to bomb countries in our region. Look at profits of companies like Northop Grumman, Lockhead martin, RTX, General Dynamics, Boeing, and Elbit systems. While taxpayers foot the bill and the US now has some 40 trillion in debt, Israel and weapons manufacturers made out with hundreds of billions. In total the US spent over 9 trillion on wars on our people in Western Asia and North Africa not because it is good for the US public but because the Zionist and corporate lobbies (and those are now intertwined more than ever). And the Ep[stein empire still uses the World Bank and IMF to bankrupt local economies globally while taking over natural resources. Now a major regional war is going on launched by the US government to please the Epstein-Maxwell-Mossad racket. The US military is destroying civilian and military “targets” in Iran (and soon Cuba) while the latter responds by attacking US bases and interests. Everyone knows who started these wars and why (rich get richer) but no one can predict where we are heading. Perhaps the global war is closer than ever. The world economy is on the brink.

Greedy capitalism maybe reaching its end and taking the world down with it.

Asra – Stories of Palestinian Prisoners

The plight of Palestinian prisoners has never felt more urgent. Today, more than 10,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons, including hundreds of children, with thousands detained without charge or trial. In recent months, the world has witnessed escalating abuses, a death penalty introduced, and those released from Israeli prisons continue to share harrowing accounts of torture, starvation and dehumanisation.

As activists, we often speak about the numbers. As theatre-makers, our role is different.

Asra – Stories of Palestinian Prisoners brings audiences face to face with the people behind those statistics through the prisoners’ own words. A woman who tore up her dress to make a bed for a stray cat in solitary confinement. A child who found a thousand mothers after being released into an unfamiliar village. A man who translated stories and secretly passed them between prisoners so they could imagine life beyond the prison walls.

Created by Harakat Productions and Sumud Ensemble, directed by Palestinian theatre-maker Dr. Rand Hazou, Asra is a documentary theatre work using verbatim testimony, puppetry and live music to honour the resilience, creativity and humanity of Palestinian prisoners.

After a powerful 2024 season at Basement Theatre, we’re raising funds to redevelop the production for touring, so these stories can reach theatres, schools, marae, festivals and community spaces across Aotearoa.

The Voice of Hind Rajab – new film will be at NZ International Film Festival later this year

In The Voice of Hind Rajab, the voice in question is a small one, belonging to a young girl alone and in unconscionable peril, high and breathless with fear and confusion. But it cuts through Kaouther Ben Hania’s film with piercing clarity, largely because, in contrast to a surrounding chorus of frantic adult voices, it isn’t performed. Rather, it’s a real-life recording of the last words ever spoken by Rajab, a 5-year-old Palestinian child killed on Jan. 29, 2024, after her family’s car was shelled by Israeli forces during their invasion of the Gaza Strip. In her final hours, the girl repeatedly phoned call-center volunteers at the Palestine Red Crescent Society, pleading for a rescue vehicle that never made it to her.

Making that horrifying 70-minute audio file the heart and spine of her film, Ben Hania baldly confronts her audience with the real-time fate of one of more than 18,000 children killed so far in an ongoing genocide.

Your KiwiSaver may be funding violations of Palestinian rights

The judgement won by PSNA forcing the NZ Super Fund to review its investments in four companies that violate the rights of Palestinian people was important. It also sends a warning across the bow of KiwiSaver and other investment funds funds. You may not realise it, but your KiwiSaver might be invested in those four companies.

Mindful Money is a charity that tracks investment in KiwiSaver, including companies on the United Nations Human Rights Council database of companies involved in the building and maintenance of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land. Our analysis shows there is even more invested in the four companies by KiwiSaver funds than by the NZ Super Fund.

So what can you do? Check your fund – it is free, quick and easy to do so. Go to www.mindfulmoney.nz, type in the name of your KiwiSaver fund into the Fund Checker, click the button ‘Show Companies’ and look for the companies with an OPT symbol. If you see any of those companies in your fund, write to your fund manager (the address is on your KiwiSaver statement) and tell them you don’t want your savings going to those companies.

If you want to shift to a fund that doesn’t invest in those companies, use the Fund Finder to find a Mindful Ethical Fund. You can also use the same website for non-KiwiSaver managed funds.

It’s your money. Don’t let it be used to fund companies that violate human rights.
