Rt Hon Winston Peters
Foreign Minister
w.peters@ministers.govt.nz
Kia ora Mr Peters,
Why have you not spoken out about the United Nations Independent Commission report on Palestinian children in Gaza and the Occupied West Bank?
The report has been out for two weeks but not a peep from you.
You normally have a lot to say but what is it about Israel’s deliberate targeting and killing of Palestinian children which demands your silence?
Why don’t you think it’s important that the report found that it appears the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) soldiers were engaged in a “game” of target practice with “different body parts being targeted on different days”.
I’m sure you have had a briefing from foreign affairs officials so why is there no condemnation of Israel? Why are you not standing up for New Zealand values? Why are you shaming our country with your silence? Is it because you didn’t want anything to spoil your meeting with the new US ambassador?
Please read the report and act on it.
One of the UN Commission’s members Chris Sidoti says:
"Anyone who has served in the Israeli Forces in Gaza since October 2023 should be considered a suspect in relation to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of genocide"
Is your government turning a blind eye to war criminals entering New Zealand for rest and recreation from the genocide in Palestine?
Why is your government not withholding visas from all Israeli military personnel.
Please respond to this email urgently.

Asra – Stories of Palestinian Prisoners
The plight of Palestinian prisoners has never felt more urgent. Today, more than 10,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons, including hundreds of children, with thousands detained without charge or trial. In recent months, the world has witnessed escalating abuses, a death penalty introduced, and those released from Israeli prisons continue to share harrowing accounts of torture, starvation and dehumanisation.
As activists, we often speak about the numbers. As theatre-makers, our role is different.
Asra – Stories of Palestinian Prisoners brings audiences face to face with the people behind those statistics through the prisoners’ own words. A woman who tore up her dress to make a bed for a stray cat in solitary confinement. A child who found a thousand mothers after being released into an unfamiliar village. A man who translated stories and secretly passed them between prisoners so they could imagine life beyond the prison walls.
Created by Harakat Productions and Sumud Ensemble, directed by Palestinian theatre-maker Dr. Rand Hazou, Asra is a documentary theatre work using verbatim testimony, puppetry and live music to honour the resilience, creativity and humanity of Palestinian prisoners.
After a powerful 2024 season at Basement Theatre, we’re raising funds to redevelop the production for touring, so these stories can reach theatres, schools, marae, festivals and community spaces across Aotearoa.

Palestine Traditional Dress Day – 25 July
Message from the Palestine Forum of New Zealand:
Dear friends and supporters,
We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating Palestinian Traditional Dress Day, observed annually on July 25. This day honours the rich heritage of the Palestinian thobe and the timeless art of tatreez embroidery.
For centuries, tatreez has carried the stories of Palestinian identity, resilience, and belonging hand-stitched and passed down through generations. Each pattern and colour reflects a region, a family, and a lived history, preserving memories of home that continue to endure despite displacement and injustice.
On Saturday, July 25, we invite you to take part by:
Wearing your thobe or Palestinian embroidery with pride at home, at work, or in public
Sharing photos on social media.
Sharing the story behind your garment its origin, its maker, and what it means to your family
Tatreez is more than embroidery; it is a living archive of Palestinian identity. To wear it is to preserve culture, honour heritage, and affirm presence.
We hope you will join us in marking this day with pride and solidarity.
With gratitude and solidarity,
Palestine Forum of New Zealand

About the fund:

Through consistent, direct mutual aid, we send up to $100 at a time (usually once a week) to families who are living through unimaginable hardship under Israel’s occupation and genocide. These contributions go straight to verified recipients, without intermediaries, ensuring urgent support reaches those who need it most.

David Seymour loses the plot
Following last week’s protest at a toyshop in Wellington (PSNA newsletter 1 July) where Deputy PM David Seymour was announcing a change in regulations for toy safety, PSNA received this protest letter from Seymour’s Senior Private Secretary.
Letter from Seymour’s senior private secretary
To: campaigns@psna.nz
Cc: wellington@psna.nz
Subject: Protest today at Toy World Wellington
Dear John
I am writing to express my concern about the actions of some PSNA protesters today when they entered Toy World in Ballance Street while the Deputy Prime Minister was in the middle of a media stand-up.
Whatever one's views on the political issues involved, Toy World is a family-oriented business. At any given time, there is a strong possibility that young children will be inside.
The shouting, chanting, and flag-waving that accompanied the protest could easily have been frightening or distressing for children who happened to be there.
Peaceful protest is an important democratic right, but I hope there is also room to consider how and where those protests are carried out. Choosing to enter a toy store during business hours, rather than remaining outside or selecting a more appropriate location, seems to have created an unnecessary risk of upsetting children and disrupting people who had nothing to do with the event.
I would encourage the PSNA to think more carefully about the venues its protesters enter in future, particularly businesses and spaces that are likely to be occupied by families with young children. It is possible to make a strong political statement while still taking reasonable steps to minimise the impact on members of the public, especially children.
Thank you for taking the time to read my concerns.
Kind regards
Rachel
PSNA’s reply to Seymour:
Kia ora Rachel,
Thanks for the note and taking the time to write.
I’ve seen video of the incident you refer to and I feel proud of the protest, the people involved, the way it was conducted and the message it had for Mr Seymour and the general public.
It’s ironic that your concerns centre on the safety of children and the claim that it could have been “frightening and distressing” had children been present. I disagree.
The real problem here is that My Seymour has been silent on Israel’s ongoing casualised killing of Palestinian children in Gaza and the Occupied West Bank.
Last week the United Nations Independent Commission on Palestine released a report which included detailed testimony of the deliberate targeting of Palestinian children by Israeli soldiers in Gaza and the Occupied West Bank.
Doctors on medical missions in Gaza reported to the Commission that it appeared Israeli Defense Force (IDF) soldiers were engaged in a “game” of target practice with “different body parts being targeted on different days”.
The Israeli casualized killing of Palestinian children in summed up in this picture:
The Israeli military targeting children is summed up in this hideous picture of an Israeli soldier. We want them all banned from Aotearoa New Zealand.
UN Commission member Chris Sidoti says "Anyone who has served in the Israeli Forces in Gaza since October 2023 should be considered a suspect in relation to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of genocide"
We agree.
On our behalf please ask Mr Seymour if he condemns the hideous picture above and if he will follow up by reading the United Nations report we have linked to above. Any reasonable person would condemn the Israeli military and take Mr Sidoti’s advice and ban Israeli soldiers from Aoteroa New Zealand.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Ngā mihi.

ACT party leader David Seymour’s “crocodile tears” for hypothetical children at protest in Wellington toy shop
The link to this media release is here
PSNA is accusing ACT Party leader David Seymour of crying “crocodile tears” for children who may have been present at a Palestine solidarity protest at a toy store in Wellington this afternoon.
Seymour was launching a policy on toy safety. Video of the protest is here.
Seymour’s Senior Private Secretary Rachel Beauchamp wrote to PSNA immediately after the protest to complain that if children had been at the toy store it could have been “frightening and distressing” for them.
“We disagree” says PSNA National Spokesperson Rinad Tamimi. “The problem here is not hypothetical children who could have been upset.”
“The real problem is Palestinian children Israel is targeted and killing in Occupied Gaza and the West Bank, with not a murmur of protest from Mr Seymour.”
The United Nations Independent Commission on Palestine released a report last week, which included detailed testimony of the deliberate targeting of Palestinian children by Israeli soldiers in Gaza and the Occupied West Bank.
“The report is horrific reading”, says Tamimi. “It says more than 20,000 children have died so far in Gaza, and more than 40,000 are wounded. These are real children who will never be able to visit a toy store ever again. The report should shock to the core any decent human being.”
“If Seymour had spent just a few minutes reading the report, even just the summary, he would condemn Israeli soldiers and sanction Israel.”
Doctors on medical missions in Gaza reported to the Commission that it appeared Israeli Defense Force soldiers were engaged in a “game” of target practice with “different body parts being targeted on different days.
“Israel’s casualised killing of Palestinian children is summed up in this picture:”
The Israeli military targeting children is summed up in this hideous picture of an Israeli soldier. We want them all banned from Aotearoa New Zealand.
UN Commission member Chris Sidoti has stated "Anyone who has served in the Israeli Forces in Gaza since October 2023 should be considered a suspect in relation to war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of genocide."
“We agree. And that includes some 50 New Zealanders who serve in the IDF.”
“We are asking Seymour if he joins with New Zealanders in condemning Israel’s deliberate targeting of children, and if he will act on Chris Sidoti’s evidence and stop the free flow of Israeli soldiers here, and instead ban them from Aotearoa New Zealand,” says Ms Tamimi.
For Life – new Palestinian film screening in Auckland and Wellington
THE FILM
Hind is a Palestinian woman whose husband is serving a life sentence in an Israeli prison. The state has tried to rob her of her right to motherhood — but she refuses to accept that.
Determined and defiant, she finds a way to smuggle his sperm across one of the most surveilled borders in the world and begins IVF treatment — refusing with every cell of her body to let occupation be the end of her story.
For Life is a film about love under confinement, about a woman's body as contested territory, and about the most primal human longing: to create life as an act of resistance.
This is not just another Palestinian story. It is a story about what states take from women when they control their bodies, their borders, and their futures.
The Voice of Hind Rajab – new film will be at NZ International Film Festival later this year
In The Voice of Hind Rajab, the voice in question is a small one, belonging to a young girl alone and in unconscionable peril, high and breathless with fear and confusion. But it cuts through Kaouther Ben Hania’s film with piercing clarity, largely because, in contrast to a surrounding chorus of frantic adult voices, it isn’t performed. Rather, it’s a real-life recording of the last words ever spoken by Rajab, a 5-year-old Palestinian child killed on Jan. 29, 2024, after her family’s car was shelled by Israeli forces during their invasion of the Gaza Strip. In her final hours, the girl repeatedly phoned call-center volunteers at the Palestine Red Crescent Society, pleading for a rescue vehicle that never made it to her.
Making that horrifying 70-minute audio file the heart and spine of her film, Ben Hania baldly confronts her audience with the real-time fate of one of more than 18,000 children killed so far in an ongoing genocide.
If The Voice of Hind Rajab opens one hitherto blinkered eye, or ear, to the atrocities in Gaza, it will have done its job. - Guy Lodge, Variety

Your KiwiSaver may be funding violations of Palestinian rights
Important message from Barry Coates – founder and CEO of Mindful Money
(Website: mindfulmoney.nz. Join our mailing list here)
The judgement won by PSNA forcing the NZ Super Fund to review its investments in four companies that violate the rights of Palestinian people was important. It also sends a warning across the bow of KiwiSaver and other investment funds funds. You may not realise it, but your KiwiSaver might be invested in those four companies.
Mindful Money is a charity that tracks investment in KiwiSaver, including companies on the United Nations Human Rights Council database of companies involved in the building and maintenance of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land. Our analysis shows there is even more invested in the four companies by KiwiSaver funds than by the NZ Super Fund.
So what can you do? Check your fund – it is free, quick and easy to do so. Go to www.mindfulmoney.nz, type in the name of your KiwiSaver fund into the Fund Checker, click the button ‘Show Companies’ and look for the companies with an OPT symbol. If you see any of those companies in your fund, write to your fund manager (the address is on your KiwiSaver statement) and tell them you don’t want your savings going to those companies.
If you want to shift to a fund that doesn’t invest in those companies, use the Fund Finder to find a Mindful Ethical Fund. You can also use the same website for non-KiwiSaver managed funds.
It’s your money. Don’t let it be used to fund companies that violate human rights.
